Question: religion won this round (and lowered humanity in the process), but what can be done to keep religion from shutting down free speech in the future?

Me, all I can say is we need to be vigilant to keep religion from trampling on 1st-Amendment type of rights - or we'll go back to the 7th century. This will only embolden those that advocate threats of violence to shut down free speech. Mohammad wins this round - but humanity lost.

Muslims will literally kill you for drawing a cartoon of Mohammed.

Religion didn’t shut anything down. That was terrorism. Fear of violence, but a government official shouldn’t be doing stuff like this because government should not be used to attack religion and it just doesn’t look right. Let private citizens hold the contest like they did in Texas. That went pretty well.

 

Always puzzled me, if Muslims don't have a picture of Mohammed, how do they know if a cartoon picture of Mohammed is Mohammed?

 

Gov't officials should advance/advocate FREEDOM, and that's what Wilders was attempting to do.
The Texas event went very very well: it showed, yet again, that Islam is a religion of violence - murder for CARTOONS....insane.

 

RELIGIOUS-inspired terrorism. Terrorism is just the METHOD that is used - but religion is the underlying REASON behind the insanity. Keep in mind that most religious people incredibly believe that they have a magic invisible centuries-old friend who lives up in the sky somewhere, so I'm not sure how sound their thinking/logic can really be.

 

Islam is more of a political ideology than a religion. I don't hear Christians saying "convert or we will kill you". Jesus said we are responsible for sharing the gospel, not for ensuring that they accept it. That's on them.

 

They DO HAVE to "accept it", or else they will burn, burn, and burn some more in the "lake of fire" that the Bible says the psycho God/Jesus set up (and he lacks the moral decency to change said punishment - a true barbarian.) God/Jesus is kind of like the Mafia in that regard: "accept our offer, or we'll break your knees" - except God/Jesus is more barbaric and for a much much longer time period, so God/Jesus is far worse than the Mafia is.

Looks like a publicity stunt to me.

 

But it's your choice, whether you believe it to be true or not and how you respond. Nobody is going to force it on you.

 

Doesn't matter who they are or what religion they follow, when they end up harming someone, it's called a mental illness. So whether it's an atheist, Christian or Muslim committing a gun or vehicle massacre, they're mentally ill. Some try to hide behind a religion.

If an atheist committed a gun massacre, not all atheists want to do the same. The vast majority of Muslims don't want to wear a suicidal vest, some go extreme and become terrorists.

People don't have to have a religion to harm others.
