Iran is a sovereign nation. If they want a nuclear bomb they're eventually going to construct one. Even Reagan negotiated with the "Evil Empire" to achieve an arms reduction.

Iran could be a valuable ally in the fight against ISIS. ISIS is much more of a security concern for Shi'ite Iran than far away USA.

A nuclear attack by Iran would mean the complete annihilation of Iran, and the partial scarring of Israel. There are plenty of ways they can achieve both of those ends without bothering with expensive nuclear programs.

Of course, Iran has a right under the NPT to nuclear power. To be honest they should never have signed it in the first place, then they wouldn't be in this strife.

 

Israel is smaller than the State of New Jersey. Any nuclear strike would render a large portion of the country uninhabitable and would wipe out a sizable portion of the population.

No doubt it would kill a sizable portion of the population (along with many citizens of neighboring states and Palestine) - but in response Iran would have every square inch of its nation turned into glass.

Sure, perhaps they have a death wish - perhaps so does North Korea. At the end of the day it comes down to this: what are you willing to do about it. There isn't a chance in hell of invading Iran, that would be a real war - none of this (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)footing around with Afghanistan and Iraq, Iran has serious capability, and an ally in Russia. You'd have another Vietnam on your hands, with tens of thousands of dead Americans.

So what's left? Sanctions (which hurt innocent parties in both countries), diplomacy, or the status quo. Take your pick.

Admittedly, I did exaggerate the effects of a nuclear blast. That does not change the fact that a nuclear strike would have disastrous consequences for Israel and could, possibly, lead to its destruction.

The Tel Aviv Metropolitan Area has a population of about 3.6 million people (49% of the Israeli population). If a nuclear weapon of any size was detonated in Tel Aviv, the entire area, or at least a significant portion of it, would be evacuated. Israel would probably have to mobilize its entire economy to even begin providing for all of the evacuees, and even then they would probably fall short.

As you could probably guess, it could only get worse from here.

 

The same applies to Iran. They are highly urbanized. An Israeli nuclear counterstrike would be just as devastating to Iran.

 

True, but an Israeli counterattack would set off an international crisis and, in a worst case scenario, start World War III.

 

Which would stop it how?

 

It wouldn't prevent a counterattack, but the results of that counterattack would be devastating for Israel. Israel can't even attack a terrorist organization (Hamas) without being condemned as racists, murderers and thieves.

 

Yeah, I think that would be different if they suffered an unprovoked nuclear first strike.

 

That would be logical, but as history has proven, the response to Israeli counterattacks is often illogical.

 

That's because they respond to thrown rocks with tank fire and rockets that kill no one with bombing campaigns that kill hundreds.

 

Hamas actively tries to get as many Palestinians killed as it possibly can so that they can use the deaths for propaganda purposes. Hamas puts their rockets in schools, hospitals, mosques, homes, etc. and tells people to ignore the advanced warning that Israel gives before it attacks.

 

And if they put them in open fields away from civilians, their entire military force would be I liberated within days. It's called asymmetric warfare for a reason.
