Makes you wonder how much money she got to set up this 'initiative'.

Some people see opportunities, some people make excuses.

Maybe this website/initiative won't appeal to everyone, or even be needed by everyone, but for those who are contemplating future career choices or contemplating changing careers it could be a very helpful resource.

Okay, can Trump officials be criticized for breaking federal ethics laws?

Ivanka Trump tweeted support for Goya Foods on Tuesday after comments from the company's top executive in support of President Donald Trump last week prompted calls to boycott the brand. “If it’s Goya, it has to be good,” the president’s daughter, who serves as a formal adviser to the president in the White House, tweeted late Tuesday in both English and Spanish along with a photo of her posing with can of black beans.

Federal ethics laws are not ambiguous in areas like these: "An employee shall not use or permit the use of his Government position or title or any authority associated with his public office to endorse any product, service or enterprise ... "

My company, in a suburban environment, has an advertisement for a job starting at $55K with full benefits and the only qualifications is a High School Diploma or GED.

It has been awful trying to find a suitable employee, even harder to get them to show up to an interview. 3 or 5 either no-showed or cancelled last minute.

Im tired of hearing the sob stories about how bad it is for select people to gain employment. I call BS. The Union Halls are sitting empty unable to find people to show up to work sober and on-time for good paying trade jobs.

What we ACTUALLY have is a bunch of people that don't want to work, so they find a bunch of excuses as to why they need to be paid to sit at home on their asses. I am sure there are more than a couple of these types of people on this forum all day long.

I don't have any useful skills, so the government needs to train me and pay while training.

Agreed. It is always easier to sit around and play the victim card, and blame someone else, rather than get off your arse, and re-invent yourself if needed.

Somehow I doubt that, but I imagine his arguments about how court cases are taking up all his time as President (ha ha) are going to be multiplied as a private citizen..

Seems @ 50 million Americans had just enough useful skills to be able to file for unemployment this year...

When unemployment is paying more than wages, are you surprised they aren't interested in going back to work?

Which likely says more about the state of wages in this country than it does unemployment....

Nonetheless, nice pivot from "no useful skills"

It worked for me later on as well.

As for your question, it's out of touch with the reality of the situation.

How so? If your job is gone then it is HIGHLY pragmatic you look for something new don't you think? What would be in touch, sit home and collect your penny's?

I am not even a LIB and can see how wrong that statement is... And just like every Trump Supporter you pull ONE GUY out of a hat and write... "be like this guy, its easy" For every one of your HERO stories there are 250 that dont make it. Do what Republicans do best and just IGNORE those people.

I'm surprised she hasn't yet recommended that people unemployed due to Covid go to work for Goya!

The extra $600/wk unemployment bonus had a way of making a whole lot of people decide they preferred unemployment to working. Go figure! Luckily that bullsh*t is supposed to expire at the end of this month.

I agree with the stated goal of the program, which is, as Ivanka said, "about challenging the idea the traditional 2 and 4 yr college is the only option to acquire the skills needed to secure a job.". That I can get behind.

But as was to be expected, the effort was a half-ass joke. And while it's not something that Ivanka Trump should be blamed for, it does come of as a little insulting that a woman who got her cushy job from her dad, a man who got his money and start from HIS dad, is telling folks to just go out and find another job in a different field. Have Donald or Ivanka Trump ever had a real job? Not an executive job at the top of the food chain, a real job.

Ehh, I like the message, but it needs to be supported, and probably needs some different messengers.

How about Mike Rowe? There's a guy who could sell this.

I would also question the idea that getting a college education should be 'challenged' at all. Really, there is a lot more to post-secondary education than simply getting job skills. It's a very enriching experience that generally focuses more on teaching students to think and reason in ways that are kind of critical to a democratic society, where we need informed, critically thinking citizens casting votes and otherwise participating in the political process.

Plus, as far as job skills are concerned, you pick up a lot in college that may be of use in any number of careers. Especially those that are more valuable and offer higher pay and benefits on average. Sure, we need people to take on skilled labor that doesn't necessarily require some sort of college degree, and no one should be shamed out of pursuing such a career or foregoing college/university if they don't need it, but neither should college be shunned on purpose.

What we most need to avoid is this us v them mentality of those who get a higher education versus those who don't, and the President needs to unite the country rather than try to divide it along that line along with so many others!

P.S. This website, funnily enough, is pointing people to places where they can earn associate's degrees, i.e. a 2-year degree from a college, so it's not even doing what Ivanka even said about challenging that idea, although it obviously does offer alternatives that are more specific. Then again, that's nothing new at all. The first thing I did out of high school was earn a 1-year computer-related certificate from a local community college. I didn't pursue that kind of education beyond that, though, and it never helped me land a job in the field. I ended up going to college/university (ultimately 3 in all!) after that and getting very different degrees, and it's the education I got at those institutions that gave me the knowledge I use to earn my living today!

Skills are the responsibility of the individual. You are suggesting that the government is responsible for instilling the skills that people need to enter the workforce?

There are all kinds of skills that affect employment, hard skills like experience and education, and soft skills like personality and drive.

The government shouldn't be in the business of providing any of these skills. People need to develop their own personal responsibility.

My only response to that is DUH...

People want the jobs and careers back they've been trained for and/or been doing for a while... 4 months is not long enough to give up on that.

You don't seem to understand that by taking this approach, Ivanka is essentially contradicting Daddy that everything is a hoax and will be going away shortly.

It's tone deaf, but still based in way more reality than her father ever is...
