That is an opinion piece, not a news story.

I hope the sane people (on both sides of the aisle) see and understand this narrative for what it is!

Social media has also been far more prone to fake news and has been more willing to project sources that have been false on a regular basis.

So, you may be getting rapid response, but there is little to make me believe you are getting anything resembling accuracy.

Trump's problems with the news media started during the campaign, when they chronicled his outrageous behavior and nasty comments.

If you accurately report on the things Trump does and says, it's going to put him in a negative light because he is such a horse's ass.

And so his war with the media has continued. Trump whines that the media is treating him unfairly, but they're just reporting the news.

As with every dictator or would-be dictator, Trump would like to control and muzzle the press.

If people would rather get their information from social media than the mainstream media, that is an issue with the mainstream media, and no one else.

Yes. That's part of the problem definition.

People tend to gravitate toward news that confirms their prior belief - confirmation bias.

In the past, one of the checks on that was that news sources were in competition on the truth. If they made mistakes, it hit their bottom line, because people would start buying their newspapers and watching the TV channels of a competitor.

Today with the internet, there are numerous sites for which publishing everything from mistakes to fake news is of no cost.

We need to be working toward some better mechanism of identifying what is correct and what is in error.

Oh we are it's just the Trump haters that are afraid of free speech as proven by their actually shutting down free speech many times. Apparently the NY Times thinks THEIR free speech is better than anyone else's.

Worse yet, Trump is being majorly rewarded for bald faced lies that he repeats over and over again.

    How??

Wait 4 years and vote in another NY Times.

Trump rocks hard as far as I am concerned. Sorry I didn't vote for him. (Just didn't vote.)

General Mattis corrected Trump today saying that the press is NOT the enemy of the people. Trump has driven a wedge between himself, Pence, Mattis, Tillerson and Ben Carson so far.

I know. I think he should learn how to bow. Don't you?
And when is he going to start talking toilets... that's what you want to know, isn't it.

The mechanism should be taking a haitus from the media, as I have done. I would much rather know about everything a couple of days after they have already occurred than have my opinions swayed by an outlet who couldn't take the time to be thorough and gather all of the facts before reporting. Other's have decided to go to the alternative media because the mainstream has become untrustworthy. This isn't limited to the left, as the right is capable of doing itto, which is why Fox News has the reputation it has.

Another approach could be re-establishing the Fairness Doctrine because it is clear that the mainstream media is incapable of providing a clear picture of events as they unfold. After a while, professional liars become very good liars, and the mainstream media has begun lying by omission. They've gotten so good at this; they don't even need to tell you an untruth in order to mislead you. You can't point to their lies because they don't make lying statements; however, by the stories that they put out, it leaves people with a false impression of what has actually happened.

How do you know Trump said the news was fake, just because you heard him say it?
    You better check yourself.

How did that drive a wedge between Trump and Mattis?

Watch his 77 minute press conference. He said "fake news" 20 times.

Mattis made him look like an idiot this morning when he said NO... the press was NOT the enemy of the people.. .. and Bannon cut Tillerson's choice of his deputy.

Trump's circle of trust has shrunk to Ivanka, Jarred Kushner and Steve Bannon.

So sorry you don't understand the difference between a news stopy and an Op-Ed piece.

So true. That is why he has a 38% approval rating.

Trump doesn't need to be popular; he only needs to do what is popular.

Everything he has done is popular; almost no one disputes this…

That is just not fair. I saw a lot of news reports on the terrible events that happened yesterday in Sweden. Several people watching Trump's new conference in Sweden died laughing.
