The Spanish region of Catalonia are having a vote today but it's not recognised by Spain.
'Barcelona is voting to separate from Madrid or not but Madrid is saying it's not legal.'
The hope from Catalonia is to perhaps put enough pressure on Madrid for a bilateral referendum vote like Scotland had with the UK or UK had with the EU.

So, who do you thinks going to win?

I don't mean the vote, I mean this impasse.

    Madrid can't control Spain forever.

Granny says, "S-o-o-o, Generalissimo Francisco Franco is not still dead after all?...

    Ghost of Franco Haunting Spain
October 01, 2017 - They emerged early Sunday with helmets, masks and flak jackets from temporary overnight accommodation, cheap boarding houses and chartered cruise ships painted with huge Warner Bros. cartoon figures, Tweetie Pie and Daffy Duck, docked at Barcelona’s port. But as the day unfolded, Barcelona was far from being Disney World.

In all honesty, best not to wind them up.
This is the most peaceful decade it has been in my lifetime.

Can;t remember the last time I heard of a bombing.

They are rich and operate independent for the most part so why is this suddenly an issue they want to push? It seems a little like bored people looking for some excitement in their lives.

    "Suddenly"

It's been an issue for all my lifetime and at least as far back as WW2.
The subject of much terrorism, war and political debate. More powers recently being devolved perhaps fuelled it further?

It's not new. It's an ongoing sore.

I will go with bored people looking for excitement. Riot police surrounded by young men in the photo above.

Okay, when I read this, I must confess... It reminds me of myself when I refer to Belgium.
But, I guess I shouldn't dismiss Belgium as just operating for operating's sake and guess I shouldn't question 'if a bomb goes off in Germany, Brussels goes on lock down' mentality.

OK but I am actually asking for your perspective as to why this matters to them or to the EU. It just doesn't seem here in America like anything more than a tempest in a tea pot. I mean Spain never seemed to really care what they did other than than they are not going to let them leave.

... I'm assuming this would be something like the UK where when the Irish screw up and the UK has to step in and run them... suspending the and Stormont Assembly and all that?

I hate to be that guy who answers your question with a question, so, forgive me, but..
How do you feel about Scottish Independence from the UK?
I can't actually answer why it matters to Catalonia because I don't know Spain like that, for all I know, Spain could still be ruled by a bunch of Franco loving D'heads for all I know, I don't know. But I do know the UK, and, well, for some reason, other counties don't know how to do a referendum? IDK. Europe has referendums all the time, but the ones in the UK seem to go un-ignored.

I think Scottish independence would be an economic disaster for Scotland. Nobody would want their currency. I just assumed being in the neighborhood, you would have some insight that those of us on this side of the planet might be lacking. So far, you seem to be avoiding saying what I have been suspecting--the answer is, "Just because we do". Doesn't seem sufficient reason to rebel to me.

I could see why you might think that, but honestly, until I went to Amsterdam by road that time and saw the flag of Amsterdam, I didn't know countries in Europe were like the UK in that they had separate countries and Amsterdam is in one called North Holland but unlike London in England in the UK, London doesn't have it's own flag (well, maybe the City of London does) but not City of Westminster or Greater London... When I first went to Flanders, I thought Flanders was the name of some WWI battlefield close by. (I was only half wrong) (It wasn't a battlefield close by, I was in it, it had it's own country and everything)... But at the time I thought Flanders was a famous field for WWI in Belgium (again, only half right because Belgium is famous and a field 'to me')..
    I've heard of Catalonia...
Also, I've heard of Prussia and Bavaria in Germany too and know Munich is the capital of Bavaria and that's where BMW comes from and that they speak their own language there, but that's it.

Catalonia existed long before Spain came into existence. They speak a different language and are a different people. For years, their economy and resources have been exploited by the tyrants in Madrid. It is no small wonder as to why Catalonians have wanted their freedom for eons.

If Spain falls tonight, could Spanish in the US become American since they'd have no country anymore and be stuck in the US?
    ... If Spain falls.
