What seems strange to me is that this is immediately being called racism, but to me - if these people were truly racist - they would have stayed on and made the new mayor's life hell. Quitting hurt no one but them.

It sounds to me as if there is something else going on in that little town.

From what I can gather those people resigned because they knew they wouldn't be riding that gravy train anymore, things are about to change and they don't have the most powerful person in office in their back pocket anymore.

It does not seem to be about racism, it seems to be about the perks these crooked (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*) wont receive or get away with. Basically, quitting while they are ahead. Good riddance.

Absolutely not. You'd have to prove that considering the circumstances, that my argument is fallacious or a result of cognitive bias...good luck with that. You are right, there were three civil servants that quit; city's attorney, the clerk and the waste water treatment plant supervisor, who all cited "safety concerns" as a reason for quitting. That reason alone, makes their motives suspect, at least it would to a rational person. As it is, this story is beginning to take off, not only in the news, but on facebook, twitter and other social media where people can express their opinions, it seems to be taking on a life of its own.

I expressed my own opinion and all I can say, I'm sorry you disagree but that's what happens in discussion forums, wouldn't you say?

I have yet to see evidence of either reason.

But, let's just say they did quit due to racism?

So? Why would there be any need for an investigation? What would be the point of that investigation? To force them back to work and then fire them for being racists?

Honestly, I can't figure out why anyone would care - since they're gone.

Lemme see, 30 year incumbent mayor is turned out and half the government quits? I'd be checking these boys passports and bank accounts right quick. Several people don't decide on a vacation to Bhutan all that quick.

OTOH this might be just the workings of the "spoils system". It does exist, particularly in out of the way backwater towns.

Well, of course it is taking off in the news and on Facebook. Too many people enjoy the ride that the "racist" bandwagon provides. Just because a bunch of posters on Facebook put as little thought into this situation as was done in the creation of this thread, that does not mean that the attention is warranted. It is easy to cry "racism". It needs no facts or thought.....just an appearance of outrage.

And why would I have to do that in order to point out that your conclusion is presumptive? You didn't put forth a real argument, the shorthand of what you said was simply: "these whites resigned after a black mayor was elected, therefore racism".

I wouldn't suggest making any claims about what a rational person would believe.

^_- just because I pointed out a flaw in your reasoning, doesn't mean I disagree. The world isn't a "with me or against me" place on every single matter. The reasoning you gave was far from sufficient basis to even suggest that there is racism at play. In fact, you didn't even really give any reasoning, just your conclusion. I can't deconstruct an argument that isn't even an argument.

Based on statements from local persons, there is no indication that your statement is correct. There is every indication that it is a mystery (unknown) or that there is suspicion of corruption. As noted, the police made up 1% of the population but most residents went days without seeing a single officer.

What registered with me is your "prima facie" concern. You've basically told us that your decision is made up, that this is racism, until further notice. Everyone else see's a good mayor stepping in and vowing to clean the town up so corrupt people resign over it. You, of course, see it as racism.

Yeah....this is line I'm thinking as well.

But making it about race seems to be all the rage.

True, either way it seems as if the (*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)s have weeded themselves out. Then again, I don't know much about this new mayor so I can't say much about her forthcoming policies. I think the officers and officials that left need to speak their peace about the situation.

You didn't say anything about alternative explanations, you just ranted and raved about racism. Other people mentioned alternatives that made more sense and only then did you say, "Well we don't have all the facts yet so we will see what the truth is." You ONLY said this after other people pointed out possible alternatives that made more sense. Your blind ideology prevents you from critically analyzing situations and more importantly from withholding judgement if you don't have enough information at hand. You just made a spurious assumption based on what you want to believe, not based on actual evidence. People like you are dangerous because the facts be damned, only what I want to believe matters. To hell with critical thinking.

Well in a town that small I imagine they probably know more than we do. It certainly could be racism, but it could be just as likely, corruption or the lack there of.

There is no facts that support racism or misogyny either. At this point we are all speculating.

I can't seem to find any campaign stuff, or anything about either candidate. I realize this is an election in the boonies but you would think someone would at least set up a Facebook page or something.

Wow why didn't they have the same concerns when Mayor Ramsey was in charge, but now all of a sudden a black woman is elected and there are safety concerns.

Mayor Elect, Tyrus, Byrd - She said her first order of business will be to help clean up the city.

Especially since she said this. I doubt she meant sweeping the sidewalks.

I guess they thought their friends were going to beat them up if they found out they were taking order from a women..... guess being out of work is not a issue for them... or they made lots of money while working there... would check their finances, make sure they did not become richer then their salaries would explain

Say what? There is absolutely nothing in this story that indicates race in involved - hell, if the town was so racist then how did a black woman get elected?

You always see things in terms of race and even when a black person wins you still see it. C'mon man, you're better than that.

Actually I was going to say you are better than that, how is it that a black woman gets elected and then all of a sudden they just up and quit. Come on man, you are smarter than that.

I doubt it's because of racism, I mean, who takes food off the table over race these days? I'm going with earlier quesses made by others that the (possible criminal) gravy train ended for these people, or maybe they knew ahead of time they were going to be replaced. Or maybe in a small town where everyone knows everyone these people just plain ol' hated each other because one of their dogs took a dump in the wrong yard.
