Oh yes. If you're not in a larger city in the USA, you're generally pretty far from any kind of public transportation. No buses, no trains, not even a taxi for miles and miles. Just roads.

I imagine things are similar in rural areas of Russia, where populations are less dense, no?

Yeah, my car is smaller and I do less driving now than when gas was high. Hehe. But, I do like my almost-new little car and won't be trading it in for something bigger even with cheap gas. I'll be ready if and when the prices go skyrocketing again.

That would be a fine option if we hadn't torn out most of our railroads long ago. My town has a historic train depot still standing, but of course the tracks are long gone.

The most rural areas here can be almost as bad, I must admit. South Dakota's roads leave much to be desired.

That's why the experts are always wrong. I like being a contrarian, make more money that way. Like Buffet says " when everyone is abandoning ship that is the time to buy". It's a long term game.

Well, yes - but as far as I know there still are regular buses passing through majority of settlements that are near cities.

I understand, why would be car a necessity for somebody living away from city, but IN the city... Dear God, I can't imagine how much money people waste on something that can be easily replaced with a public transportation ticket, that costs, like, ~35$ per months.

And the cars are all over the place - parked in parking zones, in underground parking, in yards between apartment blocks, on sidewalks and, sometimes, on the grass - which costs a same ~35$ as fine. At least costed that in late 2000th, where I was on practice in court bailiffs' office from college, typing hundreds of fines into the database. You can't imagine how much of them been for parking in the wrong place.

No, really. You found QUITE a place to compare with ANY other place in the world! OMSK, my God! It's like Jersey (or, maybe Detroit (no offence to anybody from these places, I just remember I heard somewhere on Internet about Jersey being dirty and something-something dark despair, but only managed to google "at least we're not Detroid" meme)), but for the whole planet.

Oh, and the Lena highway. Well, I see somebody loves pulling the worst of things about my country on the judgement.

    Third and First worlds, ey?

First. World. My. Ass. End. Of. Agrument.

Every country has troublesome places, it is, to say the least, unwise to judge whole country by it's worst parts only.

Yes, I think Europe and Russia have better public transport systems than we do, at least in part. You've got great subways in Moscow and Petersburg and no doubt elsewhere, and Germany has a terrific system of trains and buses that definitely puts us to shame. My experiences from studying in Germany have had me thinking that I could live there without a car and just might opt for it if I did live there, but where I live now, we've got nothing like it. In addition to the vast distances and the large number of small towns and many, many homes in the country (miles from any given town), we also just have a long history of automobile ownership that has made any other form of transportation impractical in rural areas, but at the same time given us an extensive system of roads that are for the most part well maintained. So, people here pretty much have to have a car (families will have multiple, no problem), and we get them quite affordably, whether they're used ones for a few hundred to a few thousand dollars or new ones available with affordable financing.

So, the "worst road in America" has potholes, but your Lena is a big muddy mess..

What is up with that road? Why isn't it paved and better maintained?
