Personally, I'd be far less concerned with a bat then I would be with a handgun. I think my alternative to a firearm would be a industrial strength taser, I been hit with one and they knock your dick in the dirt.. Even the sound is a deterrent!

Not so sure. The man was up and walking away after the first attack. But they followed him. That was the window where a gun could have saved his life. It doesn't make sense to ASSUME this death was unavoidable even with a conceal carry gun.

 

Had he shot one of those kids he would have been prosecuted for murder. Poor unarmed kid. This shows why we carry but there is no good outcome for the victim in this situation except a court battle is better than a grave.

I would wager that none of those ‘youths’ have any kind of relationship whatsoever with their father. Hell, that’s half the problem right there.

 

That darn traffic cone killed the old man! What will be the next killer, a box of chocolates?

 

He staggered away already concussed. The second and third hits were minor as the cone was just thrown at him. The first hit was the cause of his death as he was hit with the heavy part of the cone and hit his head on the ground

 

All the more reason for citizens to be armed.

 

Not only that, but it looks like this murder was committed by juveniles. And if they’re tried as juveniles, they will do some years in a juvenile facility and then be released when they’re in their early 20s.

 

That's the sickening part, because these young Monsters know they'll be tried as juveniles and basically get a slap on the wrist for taking a persons life. Would be nice if the breeders (parents) of these creeps could be sentenced for the murder of this old man.

So here we have a good historical historical study regarding the baseball bat v. gun debate. Goetz was a man who learned how to deal with a criminal attack. I think even the most liberal commentator in this thread understands that a baseball bat would not have gotten the job done. At least one of the Goetz attackers was armed with a sharpened screwdriver.

In 1981, Goetz was attacked in the Canal Street subway station by three young men who he claimed were trying to rob him. They threw him through a plate glass door and onto the ground, permanently injuring his chest and knee. Despite his injuries, he was able to assist a police officer in arresting one of the men.

Unfortunately, the man was only charged with criminal mischief. Goetz was angered beyond belief, resentful of the fact that the others had gotten away, and the one who hadn’t barely received a slap on the wrist.

The version of events differs between retellings and varies depending on who’s doing the retellings. Canty and Ramseur claimed they were panhandling and asked Goetz if he had five dollars [sure - he was just politely panhandeling], while Goetz claimed they cornered him and demanded money. Allen pled the Fifth Amendment when questioned about the circumstances.

After he refused to pay, Goetz opened fire, firing five shots at the men.

After his actions brought him celebrity status, he became somewhat of a national hero for vigilante justice. Bumper stickers with slogans like “Ride with Bernie – he Goetz ’em!” were all over New York, and people were praising him for taking a stand against the crime-ridden city.

Even more shocking than the support was the fact that, beginning in 1990, the crime rate in New York rapidly declined.

It will probably be "They were only children and didn't know what they were doing", or even "Sometimes stuff like this happens" (ignoring that most all of it seems to happen in some specific parts of the country and not others)

We don't really know about the murderous thugs yet, their identities, their motivations. Why is this taking so long? Their victim died June 25th and still no arrests have been made. This is outrageous! They have a video and are offering a reward.
