I would imagine they could include a clause for shared use of resources without having the cost to maintain... there are many ways to skin a cat

 really you have very little imagination, have you ever heard of the concept of twisting someone's arm... happens all the time

It is anything but an imbecilic idea, you want to leave the Arctic to the Russians and Chinese you'll be making a huge mistake

Yeah but how much will it cost to build a bridge from Mexico to Greenland?

It would be a good deal for Greenland, Denmark and the US but pride and emotions are involved.

Denmark is doing a fine job administering Greenland.

Who would be leaving the "Arctic to the Russians and Chinese"?

    Sounds like Doomsday/Tinfoil Hat Stuff.

They interviewed some of the residents of Greenland on TV. The people the Danish government subsidize for about 2/3's of their existence. Trump mentioned the idea mainly as a joke. The socialists there and here take everything he says literally. He said it kind of as a reminder to Denmark that they are not paying their share of NATO expenses. Denmark wants the US to pay $21 million a year for the land our airbase sits on which they were happy to have since it was built in 1951. As part of the Treaty, we don't pay rent. If they need the money, Trump offered to buy them out. Heck with them if they can't take a joke.

Maybe but only the US and China has the money and resourses to get it out. There was a lot of oil in Siberia too but they needed our technology and expetise to help them get to it.

Minerals might be there in Greenland too but few countries have the means to actually get it. If it comes down to the US or China, we want to make sure it is the US.

If I was in charge. The question was after all posed to me as what I would do. Trump's motivation is to simply map paint but his idiotic reasoning doesn't negate that it's not a bad idea. Greenland would be a major boon for the US, would frustrate Chinese efforts in the region and, yes, enhance American prestige. It's not like I'm advocating for conquest.

What are you going to use for money?

USA is already under massive debt and you cannot currently support you own territories

You realize that the US has assets in the multi-trillions, yes? The debt is mostly treasury bonds, 'loans' by parts of the government with extra money to parts that need money and debt for debt trades. It was a few years back so I'm sure it's changed but I once did the math and found that the US was only on the hook for about $3.2B. A few billion is chump change next to the multi trillions we can call on if needed. The issue isn't debt, it's actually paying the bills. Not paying the bills and not being able to pay the bills are 2 very different things.

Should be plenty to buy Scotland. We already have a golf course there. Once we develop Greenland we can buy that little island at the bottom. I'm sure the queen would like to be rid of it.

Declaring bankruptcy pretty much means that you can't pay your creditors. It's why you declare bankruptcy. I understand in at least one case, Trump had no interest in declaring bankruptcy but was forced to by his creditors. Once you have declared bankruptcy (depending on the chapter), you pretty much lose control of all your assets, all of them then being sold by the court to partially recompense your creditors. But after that, you're done, you own nothing but you also owe nothing, certain debts exempted like unpaid federal taxes. Some of the most successful businessmen in history went bankrupt, some of them several times before hitting it big. Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich, went bankrupt after he wrote the book. Andrew Carnegie, one of the richest men in world history, went bankrupt with his first few steel mills. Bankruptcy is no stain on a man.

It would be a one-time purchase, so that's relatively simple to deal with, even if it required financing.

    A) True, and not getting any better under Trump. This is one area among many I wish the Republicans would actually stick to their stated policy positions.

    B) Under a capitalist system, our territories are supposed to support themselves. They shouldn't need any support.
