The Romans were notorious for taxing everybody and taxmen were the most dreaded of all, but the secret to this is in the tax tables they used to allocate what you owed. A taxman would tabulate on a board that was marked as follows:

I = 1
V = 5
X = 10
L = 50
C = 100
D = 500

Hand me that 666 board, will you? Let's see how much you owe.
