Why?

The President is the only person authorized by our Constitution to negotiate with foreign powers and receive foreign heads of state. I find it both acceptable for the president to speak with foreign powers as he sees fit and normal. I also find it refreshing.

Talks between powers are rarely public, nor should they be.

You must realize that you are building a strawman here, right? No one is criticizing the President because he spoke to a foreign leader. The criticism is taking place because he spoke to a particular foreign leader, the leader of a country that directly meddled in our election, without a personal translator, without another US official nearby to record the contents of the conversation, privately, for over an hour, and without disclosing the meeting.

Nothing about that scenario is the least bit problematic?
