Security in Washington D.C is being way overblown

If we assume, for the sake of this discussion, that both fringes are exerting kind of influence you described, then the appropriate course of action is to marginalize both groups. In the short term, an over-reaction to the actions perpetrated by these fringe groups is almost obligatory. Before you can marginalize them, it must be
demonstrated what completely unacceptable and , frankly, illegal activities in which they are engaged. When the majority of the country castigates and shuns them, we will be well on our way to resuming our usual, normal partisan bickering.

 

Yeah I can put together a laundry list. Been going on all year meanwhile survey data reveals that those with the most intolerant beliefs are on the left, self-described. That's why MN happened; why Portland is still happening; why Chicago happened; why basically every major riot happened and was only tepidly denounced so as not to have to issue an apology to blacks. Because "left" politicians and voters are absolutely more racialized than those on the "right". This is clear both quantitatively in a dataset and in reality as is apparent for all to see.

MN and Portland happened because of George Floyd. The protests were against the violence perpetrated on George Floyd. The riots were opportunists who took advantage, and from the radical side of antifa. The protests were supported by the left, and the riots WERE denounced by the majority of the left. The major difference here is that the left fought for the rights of others, the right fought against other peoples rights to have their votes counted.

The idea that the riots in Minneapolis and Portland are comparable to what happened in Washington is beyond disingenuous to the debate. The protests on the left were to fight for the injustices perceived to have been perpetrated on George Floyd, their methods were wrong, but their cause was sound. While the right actually fought to overturn democracy. It was a coup against the government.

Some people here seem to be acting like the National Guard is just gearing up to deal with another demonstration. It isn't. This is the inauguration of the President - one of the larger gatherings of US elected officials you will find. Once again, context matters.

 

There will be plenty of violence. The question is what kind of violence. Weapons can deter terrorism, but not eliminate it completely, especially when we have to factor in these guys probably know a lot about how to be terrorists already.

I don't think so. I think the volume of forces will deter anything from happening. Trumpers will then claim that the fears were exaggerated by the media to make Trump look bad

 

I think you are focusing on the media when you should be looking at the fact the military took a side. The military presence there likely isn’t to deter violence but remind the president the military supports Biden becoming president because Biden won the election. It’s not the media making trump look bad. It’s the military making trump look bad.
