Senate Democrats are proposing a sweeping rewrite of the military draft laws aimed at requiring women to register for the Selective Service System, according to a draft authored by Senate Armed Services Chair Jack Reed and obtained by POLITICO.

The changes to Selective Service could be attached to the National Defense Authorization Act, a defense policy bill that’s one of the few pieces of legislation considered a “must-pass” by Congress. The move would reignite a contentious debate over whether women should be required to register for the draft, a move the House and Senate have each considered in recent years, though the change has never become law.

Actually something I agree with the Democrats on. I think women want to be equals, then they should be equals.

    What say you?

    I support equality. Good move.

Yeah, sure. Nothing wrong with that.

Plenty of jobs in the military for people to do that don’t involve kicking in doors, so it’s not like physical ability would even need to be argued here.

Everyone who deploys into a combat environment needs to be physically able to fight.

This should be a feminist goal.

Being drafted isn't like being enlisted.

No one should be drafted. The military is doing fine as a voluntary force.

But what's the likelihood of there being a draft?

    I won't say it'll never happen, I just don't foresee it.

Gosh, who didn't see this coming? Personally, I was never in favor of women in our military at all. But, the feminists couldn't stop till they had it so. Part of me feels like yes, if women want to be the same as men, why shouldn't we be drafted like men? Can't have it both ways. On the other hand, I have granddaughters (who aren't liberals!) so I would hate to see it.

Well if they wanted equality they should have had to sign up for the draft when they got the right to vote.

Doesn't mean the need will not arise again. We are no longer the sole world power and looks like there are some ready to knock us off entirely.

Women should register but not get drafted. I like equality, but I don’t want to see women going into caves looking for terrorists.

On the other hand, it sends terrorist organizations a strong message. "You got killed by a girl!"

In theory, sure. In practice, not so much.

I’ve seen plenty of FOBbits providing support that wouldn’t be much good in a fire fight. Plus I’m guessing in a draft situation we wouldn’t really be able to be picky, right?

Can you not be drafted into a support position?

I don’t think it’s likely we’d see a ground war with another major power. I think we’d more likely fight a cyber war now. If it did come to physical blows I don’t see it being won with ground forces.

Not really the slightest but relevant to the discussion.

It's about whether or not men and women should be equal

I agree in many regards, especially how war is fought currently. However that might be, either them or us could shut down a digital war which would lead to a hot ground war. Allot more assault carrier in the world these days so you can get armor and personnel anyone in the world quickly.

Are you intending to come off hot here or am I just seeing something that isn’t there?

I already stated my opinion. Men and women should be treated equally. That said the physical limitations of all people, regardless of sex, should taken into consideration when determining what role they would be able to play in the military.
