There are drawbacks to metal roofing. They get dirty very easy and
if Green or red show off that dirt. They are also unattractive.
Plus are noisy when pelted by rain or Hail. Most Homeowner policy
cover the cost of hail damage to a roof.

The plan for the west fence is tree-bark textured, steel rod. I'm shooting for something that looks like somebody got the straightest sticks he could find and tied them together.

I plan to learn how such things were tied and use jute twine to cover the welds.

Sticks & stones may break my bones but Fencing is for those type who
    can't handle organized Football.Just the occasional Kennedy-type
touch football in cape cod shorts and alligator shirts { probably blue or
pink in color }.Therefore go with blue or pink borders. You can always explain
    to passing neighbors how Kennedy-like.

One can like/Love their pet.Or even a Babe Ruth candy bar.
Or wearing a Nehru Jacket or Leisure suit.
But Liking a roof is taking it too far.
I doubt many a Friday Coffee Klatch hears that.
Oh Maggie I just adore that roof of yours.

I will have you know.... A man built his house with A metal roof for his wife.... True love.... She requested the metal roof to remind her of her childhood listening to the rain on the roof..

Of all the critters in our area deer are by far the most destructive animal around. They've damaged the pecan, hazelnut and apple trees in our orchard, a weeping willow and wrecked several Leyland Cypresses that I've had to replace. I've had to put wire screens around all our young trees to keep the deer from killing every one of them.

I'm about ready to kill Bambi. I've been thinking about spraying some deer repellant on or around the cypresses but I'm skeptical that even the best brands will work on those buggers.

I dug around last night and found this picture of some of my wife's handiwork. Most of these are the tall Dutch Masters but there may be some Quails off in the distance.

    DAFS.JPG

When I dug the beds in our garden I made her a couple of beds to stick more daffies in - you can see one of the Mouse Police patrolling the perimeter at far left:

    FRONT.JPG

Our cats have been hell on the field mice around the house and I think that's why I haven't seen any Copperheads this year even though there's been an explosion in their population in the Southeast and a rise in the number of snake bites. While we get Black Bear passing through here now and then I consider those pit vipers the most dangerous animal in our area. A couple of years ago one almost bit my wife when she was out watering late one afternoon and I had to shoot it because it was so aggressive.

Buy a few rolls of black mesh bird netting at Lowes or Home Depot and drape it around the trunk and lower branches of trees. The deer hate the stuff. Here are a few alternatives:

Here's another shot of some of the bulbs my wife has planted, although I helped her with this site which is part of the shade garden in our backyard:

    BK BED BLOOMS.JPG

Eventually, I'm going to turn this into a Japanese garden. You can see a Bloodgood Japanese Maple in the background (at left) and I planted another further off to the left that you can't see, but what's great is that we had about 9 seedlings pop up around the Acer in this photo and transplanted them into containers. Three of them are real vigorous and look great - if they grow as fast as their parent I might be able to plant them next year. Some time within the next couple years I'm going to start adding structures and perhaps some statuary but I've got a long list of landscape and house projects that I have to get knocked out first.

I pee in a sprayer then circle the stuff I deer roof with an unbroken line of the stuff. Redo after rain.... Or when scent goes away.

Oh, that is wonderful! Many kudos to your wife! I did much planting when I first moved here (East TN) when I was younger. Now, everything has outgrown it's self and I'm too creaky to get down and work on it all for any length of time. I have iris out the whazoo, and most of my daffodils have faded out because I haven't renovated (thinned) them. Let me know if your wife would like some iris rhizomes, I'll find some pictures to post up, happy to send.

As to copperheads, we have them too. I've been told that is why you see the occasional pile of branches out in the middle of a field... let the snakes hang out there, away from the house and immediate grounds....

The hostas are deer bait. Have you (your wife) considered planting herbs intermixed with those lovelies, as deer don't like the scent of most herbs. No guaranty, as hostas are like deer-nip....

Technically, you are correct, except for when you are incorrect.

Attractiveness is subjective, and used in the right setting and color, can be very attractive. They don't get any dirtier then other roofing materials. They are only noisy when not properly insulated underneath. Homeowners insurance will go down when a quality metal roof is installed, and a metal roofing has a Class A fire rating. If you file a claim for hail damage, your premium will increase. A side effect of filing an insurance claim, it can also effect your overall credit score.

Thanks. When we moved out there it didn't look so nice - the property was completely overgrown and it took me about 5 years to get where it is in that picture. For the first two years I spent a lot of my weekends out in the fields chopping and digging up pine, cedar and sweet gum stumps and roots by hand. I let a couple of acres that's full of white milkweed stay relatively wild because it attracts butterflies and other beneficial insects that will wander over to our little orchard and vegetable garden to pollinate those plants.

Yup - we live on a ridge that I'm told is the highest point between Richmond, VA and Raleigh, NC. Our property is an old parcel of what used to be a huge tobacco plantation that was originally settled around the mid-1700s. If you wander around the woods on our property you'll find the foundations of the old farmhouses and barns that were out here along with fruit and nut trees (chestnuts, black walnuts, persimmons) that were probably growing out in the open when this place was a farm.

Thanks - I've actually got some in our shed. I might drape it around the cypresses.

As you can see I married a bulb planting machine.

Daffodils are here favorite plant and she literally can't get enough of them. I think she's got another shipment coming from KvB coming next week. The good thing (for me, at least) is that she's getting more open to planting other things, which is why I put her up to massing some crocuses around the property.

I'd like to see the pics of your irises. We've got a couple dozen tall bearded irises that my wife planted several years ago and one of the things on my Honey-Do list this Fall is digging her a new and bigger bed out in a sunnier location. I presume the irises have reached the point where they need to be divided so I guess she wants to move while she's going through all that.

Strangely enough the deer have left those hostas alone and I suspect it's because the shade bed is located close to our house (that's probably why they haven't trashed our vegetable garden, too). The deer tend to roam and graze in the clearings away from our house where they can keep a comfortable distance from us and see everything around them, and that's where they've been doing all their damage.

Hardly ... Dear Gent.Used to be that a custom home was known for it's
roof. It's overall architecture and it's roof. The best roofs were usually
with the most custom shingles.Like wood or slate.
There's a reason that roofs were not metal until about a decade ago.
That is when Metal buildings were popular instead of framed wood.
