I think your subject line should say, ...in our Galaxy. Not in our solar system, There is only one here.

How are they calculating this? We've discovered a lot of extra solar planets, and so far nothing nearly earth-like, or even potentially terraformable.

Ummm... in our galaxy you mean.

I really want this to happen. Life being so rare is a bit of a burden. How can we be the only ones? It makes no sense.

Happy hunting for all the astrological eggheads!!!

I dunno, the Galaxy is huge and if there is other intelligent life than it stands to reason there are plenty out there smarter than us,,,right?

Soooooooo,,,,how come nobody found us? All this time and nobody stopped by with a cake?

Why is it we keep thinking it should be us to find them, when it stands to reason if there is life out there then they should have found us by now....

    I got a lonely feeling........

    N = R* • fp • ne • fl • fi • fc • L

    Where,

N = The number of civilizations in The Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable.

R* =The rate of formation of stars suitable for the development of intelligent life.

fp = The fraction of those stars with planetary systems.

ne = The number of planets, per solar system, with an environment suitable for life.

fl = The fraction of suitable planets on which life actually appears.

fi = The fraction of life bearing planets on which intelligent life emerges.

fc = The fraction of civilizations that develop a technology that releases detectable signs of their existence into space.

L = The length of time such civilizations release detectable signals into space.

The real value of the Drake Equation is not in the answer itself, but the questions that are prompted when attempting to come up with an answer. Obviously there is a tremendous amount of guess work involved when filling in the variables. As we learn more from astronomy, biology, and other sciences, we'll be able to better estimate the answers to the above questions. Many of these questions will be addressed in depth in future issues of Enigma.

I think it boils down to the distances involved and physics meaning it's just not possible to stop by for cake...

IMO it is L which is the biggest bugaboo! I wouldn't bet $100 that life on Earth will last another 500 years...

But that's my point, other civilizations should not find this to be such a problem. If there is life out there then they must be some billions of years ahead of us....

    Sooooooo,,,wheres our cake?

They would not have that big a head start. For the type of star the sun it did form reasonably early in the life of the galaxy

Same point, they would still be wayyyyyyyyyy ahead of us. Also they could come from any place, traveling for God knows how long.

Maybe they are here. They rematerialize here at will and we dont know it. They are so advanced we humans have no idea they are already here.

I have to be honest I have always thought that UFOs in general (If they exist) are actually trans dimensional. The incredible variety of shapes sizes and colors, would put all the combined auto makers on Earth to shame.

Seriously guys, we are always talking about us finding them,,,,how vain of us. The Likelihood is if they are out there then it is ''we'' that will be found.

Since this has not come about,,,odds are...........................................0

As soon as we determine with accuracy the closest exoplanet with conditions suitable for human life, we should immediatly begin planning a mission to visit it.

There are some earthlike worlds.. At least as far as mass and solar input are concerned. It remains to be seen, though, whether they resemble Earth in any other respects. They could just as easily be Super Venuses or Super Marses as Super Earths, I suppose.

With the Milky Way Galaxy having anywhere from 150 to 200 Billion Stars....probability dictates a large number of Earth like Planets.

Agree. Mike was apparently just talking about the ones we've discovered to date, though, and so I was as well.

As well...any Highly Advanced Interstellar Traveling Civilization would NOT use EM based communication such as Radio to communicate within interstellar distances and would most likely use some form of Sub-Space Radio.

Is sub-space more than science fiction?
