It took Russia just 1 year and 5 months.

Andrei Romanovich Chikatilo (Russian: Андре́й Рома́нович Чикати́ло; Ukrainian: Андрій Романович Чикатило; 16 October 1936 – 14 February 1994) was a Soviet serial killer, nicknamed the Butcher of Rostov, the Red Ripper, and the Rostov Ripper, who sexually assaulted, murdered, and mutilated at least 52 women and children between 1978 and 1990 in the Russian SFSR, the Ukrainian SSR, and the Uzbek SSR. Chikatilo confessed to 56 murders and was tried for 53 of these killings in April 1992. He was convicted and sentenced to death for 52 of these murders in October 1992 and subsequently executed in February 1994.

Because of the number of people in prison who were convicted on unreliable evidence, even if they are not provably not guilty, I think the DP has become an blight on our jury system and constitutional protections, and the simple fact is that it has no deterrent effect on people commonly killing one another.

But some crimes are so abhorrent, and guilt is not even questionable, I think the DP still has some viability. (-: And people knowing that if they drag a person to death, esp over race, that the needle and its possible unpleasant side effects, serves a valid purpose.

I can't find it in me to pray for this guy.

It has a huge deterrent effect on those who were sentenced to death. They'll never do it again.
In this day of DNA science, convicting the innocent is rare and sentencing them to die even rarer. The death sentence should be reserved for those whose guilt is certain, as you suggest.

I feel that he should have been dragged to his death.

It's not about closure, it's not about revenge.

It's about making sure that someone who would do such an awful thing can never do it again.

Some people are broken. Anyone who does something like chaining a human being to the back of a vehicle and dragging them for miles can't be fixed.

You think you are, but you're not.

As long as this guy is alive, he has a high likelihood of killing someone else.

You just believe in giving a killer the chance to implement the death penalty on someone else.

Get very far west of the Sabine and a pine tree has to grow a deep taproot in Texas. But they do it.

K, if you want to cut appeals, how many innocent people are you cool with the government murdering? What number would satisfy your bloodlust?

You may want to rethink the assertion that wrongful convictions are rare.

Judges who may not be certain do not impose the death penalty and on appeal after appeal, other judges weigh in on the evidence and other particulars of the trial.

There are more wrongful guilty verdicts with lesser crimes than there are for murder verdicts. But of course there is a record of executions of the innocent. But of the crime. A lot who are innocent were found guilty partly because they were hardrock criminals all along.

In the case of the Texas executed for the dragging death of the black man, both executed were passengers in the truck doing the dragging. The driver is in prison for life. Sanders is advocating for him to get his voting right back.

I also believe in an eye for an eye. A man who murders ten people shouldn't be given ten consecutive life sentences. He should be tortured in ten different ways on a regular basis for the rest of his life in prison.

Interesting town. I thought parts of ET were poverty horrible, until I visited that stretch from Lake Charles to Lafayette. Nearly died in Lake Charles. Got off an airplane and nearly drowned near the highway entrance, the water coming almost to the top of my wheels. I was lucky and have never challenged water since when driving.

Who is it you're trying to elevate....the murdered person or the vicious killer? Q: Would anyone drag someone to death behind their vehicle if they knew the very same would happen to them? It's called deterrent.

I don't believe there is a deterrent since they don't think they're going to get caught. You can however elevate them - by hanging them.
