90 percent of Americans support background checks.

In those states where citizens have a right to put on the ballot and pass their own laws, we are 8 and 0.

The special rights gun gnutters can reach Congress but not the 90 percent who understand how stupid and immoral it is to sell firearms to complete strangers.

    Felons and wife beaters.

The Eddie Eagle program is a PR stunt by the NRA.

And I have already posted a more viable alternative.

I cannot force you to read.

Further: it isn't up to me to provide an alternative to something that doesn't work when nothing is better than something that doesn't work.

Do you know anyone who has cancer?

Most people are smart enough to understand a handgun left in a night table drawer is not safe firearm storage.

Especially in a household that has children in it.

Do I have to explain this to you?

I don't know where you live but over here in the USA we have a jury system and if someone were to be arrested and put to trial here, he/she would have an opportunity to explain if he/she thought he/she complied with the law, and the jury decides on guilt.

Now I doubt that anyone is calling for home inspections, someone who is arrested for violating this law is arrested because there is a dead child next to the shelf you tell us you think is adequate safe storage in a home with children.

    Here's one definition:\
A “secure gun storage or safety device” is defined in 18 U.S.C. § 921(a)(34) as:

    (A) a device that, when installed on a firearm, is designed to prevent the firearm from being operated without first deactivating the device;

    (B) a device incorporated into the design of the firearm that is designed to prevent the operation of the firearm by anyone not having access to the device; or

    (C) a safe, gun safe, gun case, lock box, or other device that is designed to be or can be used to store a firearm and that is designed to be unlocked only by means of a key, a combination, or other similar means.

    So?

    Another straw man.

A locked box is a locked box.

A night table draw is a night table drawer.

Do you understand the difference between the two?

I'm not a fan of censorship.

But one - sided censorship is worse.

What I would like to see is something that is even-handed, and not reward the people who dish it out get thrown back in their face go crying to mommy.

    My opinion, of course.

It won't prevent criminals from getting guns any more than the drug war stopped drugs and it won't stop private sales...

Take it from an Irish Brit... all the restrictions the Government imposed along with invasive, door busting raids didn't stop the flow of military grade weapons from being imported or manufactured by either side in the years of troubles or now nor impede the flow of drugs.
Gun ownership is a fundamental human right. Equality under the law is as well which is why an amendment protecting that right passed. If anything, the Constitution has been expanded to guarantee fundamental rights not remove them.

The NRA blocks nothing. It represents individual gun owners to folks in congress (both sides of the isle) and Congress has prohibited the creation of a gun registration system, the anti-gun hidden agenda with a call for a UBC. A UBC, in itself will not achieve the measurable impact promised, because the promise has been made on a foundation of lies... ala Obama's assertion 40% gun show sales do not have a BC.

    http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/judicial/294213-why-universal-background-checks-wont-work

Where passed, the effectiveness and the hidden agenda has been misrepresented to voters and many of those voters will see through the charade ultimately. Those voters that backlashed against the liberal deceptions and failure, electing not just Trump, but changed the political landscape across the country are becoming skeptical of liberal claims. A rising trend is easing of gun rights legislation and an increase of Constitutional carry states, a trend continuing that will likely be advanced since the GOP now dominate in most state legislatures. As shrill as the shell shocked liberal voices become amid the disbelief of recent election losses, voices of rationality are emerging.
So, good luck with your wish there.
I, as most gun rights advocates, only see solution in focusing on enforcing laws against criminals and addressing the social/economic solutions that will mitigate crime, recidivism, and other elements that generate people that seek to prey on others. Guns don't make criminals any more than a car makes you an ISIS jihadi willing to drive it into and kill people in their name.
Considering your assertion that the NRA lobbying costs lives, doesn't take in account the balance of lives saved in DGUs and despite claims to opposite and rejection of liberals of various DGU's, even the CDC 2012 report couldn't discredit the value of DCU's.

    http://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/cdc-study-use-firearms-self-defense-important-crime-deterrent

The level of distrust in anti gun positions is rising. Any new Laws regarding a National level UBC will be imputent. Most gun owners know that and haven't voricifously opposed it, but the moment a National gun registration is proposed, even the NRA's voice in the matter will pale in comparison to opposition the will emerge... then more liberal losses at the polls. So, just how hard do you think national liberal politicians will fight? The escalation of the debate, I predict, will result in more states adopting Constitutional carry along with National Reciprocity.

One further note, there is increasing support for a Constitutional Convention; given the current GOP domination in the States, any emphasis on castrating the 2A will likely backfire given the vast majority of Americans support not only it, but even concealed carry. The Dems lost touch with American voters, how much more are they willing to risk?

By the way, most law abiding gun owners would voluntarily use the current system if they had access... I would... but they don't.

UBC aside and back to the OP, one thing I have advocated several times regarding children, is mandatory gun safety courses in our education system. Most in the community I was raised in did that for their children, it was done for me, and I did it for my girls. Knowledge is power, and in this case, safety.

Really? The San Bernardino killers bought guns without a background check in California. The California law did not stop their friend from selling them the rifles without a background check.

No one has explained to me how a UBC will be enforced considering we don't enforce incidents of sales to felons, straw purchases, BC form lying now.

First thing the state has to do it prove the sale took place while the law requiring the UBC was in place.
Unless someone incriminates himself of there's some sort of sting operation in place, there's no way the state can do this.

    Fallacy: Argumentum ad populum
If support is as strong as you say, no elected official would vote against it.
So much your claim to that level of support.

I don't believe it is enforceable but I guess I am asking a liberal supporter of UBC to answer that question.

They can't because they don't understand the burdens placed on the state when prosecuting a crime

Why is it so hard for you to understand what a law is for?

It is against the law in this country to kill someone under almost any circumstance.

    It's called murder.

Since there are close to 10,000 murders in this country, you could insist (your logic) the the murder laws do not work.

But the people who are in prison would disagree.

We have a law in this country that licensed gun dealers must do background checks.

As a result of this law, there have been over two million sales that have been blocked that would have been otherwise put through.

To murderers, felons, wife beaters lunatics, and terrorists.

So don't say they don't work.

Laws against murder aren't there to stop people from committing murder, they;re there tp punish people when they do.
YOU stated the laws requiring universal background checks are there to stop people form selling guns to those unable to legally own them - which hey cannot do.
Certainly, you can see the apples/oranges of your response.

The number you referred to of denied sales are derived from FFL sales already covered by law. How are UBC's going to be enforced with private sellers?

Why do you ask the same questions already answered above?

    With police officers.

Perhaps you have a number, you know, like: it takes three times or five times before it sinks in.

How are laws enforced where you live?
