Under ordinary circumstances that would be understandable, if not defensible. This isn't an ordinary circumstance.

Maybe not, but it's a fact. Then there are the non-affiliated, less to non-partisan swing voters better known as independents who are leaning toward voting republican this midterm. My answer is inflation, rising prices, the less ability one has to make ends meet makes this very unordinary circumstances. For almost every election I can remember the economy has been the number one issue. A good economy leads independents to vote for the party in power, a bad economy, they'll vote for the party out of power. That's normal and that's the way it has always been. When the leaked draft from the SCOTUS in overturning Roe didn't move the needle in who one plans on voting for, I highly doubt the 1-6 hearings will do so.

Elections, they're usually all about the economy. There's been a few exceptions, but they're rare. This midterm, it's all about inflation and rising prices. Midterms are a referendum on the party in power. Happy with the way things are going, you retain the party in power. Unhappy, you give the party out of power a chance, the only alternative available in our two party system and monopoly.

People who view the temporary problem of inflation as more important than the existential threat to democracy we are living through have misplaced priorities. But I take your point.

Former Trump aide Peter Navarro indicted for contempt of Congress in defying Jan. 6 Capitol probe subpoena

Former Trump White House advisor Peter Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury for contempt of Congress over his refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Navarro, 72, had refused to appear on Feb. 23 in response to the subpoena and also refused to produce documents sought by that subpoena, according to the indictment.

The 2 party US system is a failure - there is no hope for the forseeable future. All we do is vote for the lesser of 2 evils

Warnings To Pence About Jan. 6 Included Another Trumpian Quid Pro Quo

The pressure campaign to sway then-Vice President Mike Pence into stealing the 2020 election for Donald Trump led Pence’s chief of staff to alert Pence’s security detail, and included an extremely Trumpian quid pro quo, The New York Times reported Friday. In the days ahead of the Jan. 6 Capitol attack, Pence was under sustained pressure from the then-President to use his ministerial (but largely symbolic) role in counting Electoral College votes to, instead, throw out the votes and deliver the election to Trump.

That pressure campaign ultimately led Pence’s chief of staff Marc Short to fear for Pence’s safety, the Times reported. The day before the Capitol attack, Short warned Pence’s lead Secret Service agent that then-President Donald Trump was going to turn against Pence, and, in the Times’ words, that “there could be a security risk to Mr. Pence because of it.”

But most intriguingly, the Times reported that Trump’s chief of staff, Mark Meadows, informed Short that Trump was withholding transition funds for Pence that could be used to establish a post-White House office. That development, per the report, “left the Pence team on high alert about the pressure campaign.”

The funds were ultimately approved, the Times reported — soon after Jan. 6.

I assume once the public hearings begin the 1/6 committee is going to tie all these disparate, despicable threads in to a bow.

Proud Boys leader Tarrio, four others, charged with seditious conspiracy

The leader of the far-right Proud Boys group and four associates have been charged with seditious conspiracy related to the Jan. 6, 2021 attack that was intended to block Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election, the Justice Department said on Monday.

A federal grand jury in Washington also charged them with conspiring to prevent an officer from discharging any duties.

It's the second group tied to the deadly siege on the U.S. Capitol to face the rare and serious charge of conspiring to overthrow the government or prevent the execution of U.S. law. Eleven members of the Oath Keepers group, including leader Stewart Rhodes, were charged with seditious conspiracy earlier this year.

Seditious conspiracy sounds like something Trump and Eastman could be charged with.

Trump on Trial: A Guide to the January 6 Hearings and the Question of Criminality

The report’s review of well-established law and public record evidence as it exists today leads the authors to believe that there is substantial evidence of all the essential elements of those federal and state offenses and suggests there is a substantial basis for prosecutors to go forward. Accordingly, the report considers whether the Committee will send prosecutors an evidentiary “road map” or even formal criminal referrals as among the possible legislative and other outcomes following the hearings. The decision whether to make such referrals rests with the January 6 Committee and the ultimate determination whether to prosecute must be made by the Department of Justice—and for Georgia state offenses, by the Fulton County District Attorney. But the issues bearing on those judgments are among the most important open questions as the Committee does its work and as prosecutors weigh next steps. Our report’s analysis is intended to help readers evaluate all those proceedings going forward.

This is a tremendous resource in understanding the scope of the attempted coup.

Fox News announced on Monday that Fox News Channel won’t be airing the House Jan. 6 Committee’s public hearing during primetime on Thursday. The primetime programs will only cover the hearings “as news warrants,” according to the press release.

Surprised? I'm not. Faux is still pretending 1/6 was just a normal day when a few tourists got rowdy.

    Potential Evidence Of A Crime

Most notably in Tuesday’s order, Carter ordered Eastman to turn over an email to the committee because it fit the crime-fraud exception to attorney-client privilege — that is, an instance where “a client consults an attorney for advice that will serve [them] in the commission of a fraud or crime.” Carter has previously found that Trump and Eastman likely broke federal laws in their effort to disrupt the certification of Biden’s win.

Tuesday’s ruling expanded the scope of those potential crimes — back to Dec. 22, 2020, when an unnamed attorney explained the risk of bringing litigation over the interpretation of the Electoral Count Act, the law that governs the certification of Electoral College votes and the weak point that Trump sought to exploit on Jan. 6. That email is among those sought by the committee.

“Because the attorney concluded that a negative court ruling would ‘tank the January 6 strategy,’ he encouraged the legal team to avoid the courts,” the judge wrote of the email in question, adding that it cemented the direction of the Jan. 6 plan.

If Republicans get more votes than Democrats how does that threaten democracy?

What threatens democracy are things like the congressional district maps drawn by Repubs in OH. Maps that were rejected by the state SC as being unconstitutionally partisan 5 times. 5 rulings the Repubs have ignored. OH Repubs have orchestrated things so that even if both parties receive the same number of votes Repubs will gain a 5 seat advantage over Dems. Meaning they will empower themselves to maintain majority control over the state legislature while receiving less votes than Dems. That is something that has happened on a national level as well as in a number of other states.

Jan. 6 Panel In Talks With Cipollone To Testify Publicly

The House Jan. 6 Committee and former White House counsel Pat Cipollone, who had a front-row seat to Donald Trump’s 2020 election steal efforts, are hashing out terms for the attorney’s potential public testimony, according to ABC News.

Cipollone, who already appeared privately in front of the committee in April, reportedly told the committee that he would only testify publicly on ex-Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark’s role in helping Trump try to weaponize the DOJ in his bid to cling to power after the 2020 election.

ABC News reported that the Jan. 6 panel wants Cipollone to testify publicly alongside ex-acting Attorney General Jeffrey Rosen, ex-acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue and Steven Engel, the ex-head of the DOJ’s office of legal counsel.

I would especially like to hear from Rosen.

The other consideration for the exec's at Faux is how to explain to their audience the incongruence of the facts discussed during the televised hearings and the horse**it Faux has been peddling as they tried to establish an alternate reality.

Raffensperger In Talks With Jan. 6 Panel To Testify Publicly

Trump’s Really Not Gonna Like This One
After steamrolling Trump crony Rep. Jody Hice (R-GA) in the primaries, Georgia Secretary of State and key witness Brad Raffensperger (R) is now speaking to the House Jan. 6 Committee on potentially testifying at a public hearing, according to Politico.

    • Raffensperger has already provided testimony to investigators behind closed doors: He had a private interview with the Jan. 6 committee in November, and he also testified in front a special grand jury in Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ Trump election meddling probe last week.

It's been a long time waiting for the hearings. Glad they're finally starting.

Jan. 6 Committee Could Have Report, Transcripts Out In September
The House Jan. 6 investigation may release the evidence it’s gathered in September, a federal prosecutor said on Thursday.

The statement came as federal prosecutors and defense attorneys for Proud Boys accused of seditious conspiracy discussed whether the DOJ has received evidence — including transcripts — from the panel. One prosecutor said that the committee may release the transcripts publicly around September.

The new phase started last night. With stunning clarity Liz Cheney announced the case the committee will lay out in order to show Trump's guilt in committing crimes against the American people.
One person who must have been listening with particular interest was Fani Willis. She's the Fulton County DA investigating Trump's call to Raffensperger. Any pretense of Trump's ability to claim he made the call because he actually thought there was fraud was shattered last night. We learned numerous WH staffers, and even Billy the Bagman, told Trump point blank that he lost. Meaning Trump can't claim he made the call because he was suffering a delusional episode during which he was removed from reality. He knew what he was doing was an illegal act in contradiction to the facts.

On a personal note, I assume many of the board's progressives feel the same way, it's nice to have posts written on the subject of 1/6 and all it entails, totally vindicated by what we heard last night and what we were told we will hear in the coming weeks. Liz Cheney's detailing of the evidence they will present was, if you'll pardon the phrase, a "I told ya so" moment.

I was encouraged by Cheney's reference to there being 7 aspects to Trump's attempted coup.

The Jan. 6 Committee Gets It: Trump’s Attack On The 2020 Election Wasn’t About One Day

We’ve been wondering for months whether the Jan. 6 committee will understand the Jan. 6 insurrection as a one-day spasm of violence, or the culmination of months of lies, provocation and planning from Donald Trump and his close associates.

From the beginning of Thursday’s hearing, it was clear the committee’s theory of the case is that it was a sweeping, sophisticated, and planned conspiracy to subvert the 2020 election.

Chair Bennie Thompson (D-MS) and Vice Chair Liz Cheney (R-WY) discussed the attack as part of a months-long scheme by Trump to steal a second term in office, one that included failed litigation, lies from Trump to his base, pressure campaigns against DOJ officials and the then-Vice President, and even a refusal by Trump to dispatch help to the Capitol in the middle of the attack.

The most audible reaction in the room came when Cheney relayed testimony that Trump had said, “And maybe our supporters have the right idea, Mike Pence deserves it,” after hearing that the mob was chanting “hang Mike Pence.” It had previously been reported that Trump had reacted with approval to the chants, but not in such a stark statement.

Cheney also revealed that Rep. Scott Perry (R-PA) explicitly sought a pardon from Trump after the events of January 6 in order to evade prosecution for his efforts to overturn the election. She added that multiple other unnamed members did the same.

I would be very interested to learn the names of the others.

Pence team couldn't verify Trump campaign's election fraud claims, new memo shows

In the days before the electoral college certification, then-Vice President Mike Pence’s legal team laid out that they found most of the Trump campaign’s assertions of election fraud minor or unverifiable, according to a previously unseen memo obtained by POLITICO.

The memo shows Pence’s legal team didn’t just track the barrage of wild legal arguments from former President Donald Trump’s lawyers and allies, but also meticulously monitored the allegations of election fraud and mismanagement. It specifically includes charges leveled by the Trump campaign itself in court.

    https://www.politico.com/news/2022/06/10/pence-team-election-fraud-memo-00038921

Nobody could verify them.........cuz they are lies.
