It's not true that switching from the EC to popular vote hasn't come up before 2016.

I agree that until Conservatives find selection of President and Vice-President by popular vote advantages an Amendment would have no chance.

But discussing change can do no harm and might make us better prepared if the day ever comes.

But, you're missing my point. Just because an amendment to abolish the EC and adopt a popular vote system became law, that doesn't mean the Federal Government would take over the State's responsibility to run "THEIR" Presidential election.

The election of President and Vice-president would become similar to how States choose Senators and Representatives. Instead of agragating the EC votes the popular vote from each State would be sumed to determine the winning ticket.

They can't. The EC is in the Constitution, it would have to be done by a Constitutional Amendment.

But, why wouldn't they? IF such an Amendment was adopted there would no longer be "fly-over" States; every vote would be important and need to be worked for and earned; none could be taken for granted.

The bicoastal secular progressive urban elites who largely populate the democrat party are waging war against our constitutional republic and our freedom. They are not prepared to tolerate dissent or an opposing view. All of their policies are designed to damage flyover heartland American culture and civilization. That the democrats are so demanding that they be allowed to impose their agenda upon us that they are willing to scrap the Supreme Court as we know it, the senate, and the electoral college.

The Left suffer from a peculiar form of derangement. So long as it continues to howl and emote over the right things and the right issues, it believes that it has a free pass to indulge in whatever behavior will satisfy its basest urges. Whether it is dinner at French Laundry or an attempt to defile little girls, as long as Left mouth the right words, it can do whatever it wants. It is why the Left can call the destruction of black neighborhoods a peaceful demonstration and why court jesters like Brian Stelter can ask us with a straight face to care about a Garter snake at his farmhouse while people sleep on the streets. So long as the Left continues to mouth all of the right sentiments, and people are dense enough to believe them, the elite can continue to enjoy chardonnay, foie gras and apparently the pursuit of children for sexual pleasure, while the people in the inner cities and Indian reservations remain poor, addicted, pissed off, and none the wiser. Bread and circuses.

Nobody wants what’s coming, so nobody wants to see what’s coming.

On the eve of the first civil war, the most intelligent, the most informed, the most dedicated people in the United States could not see it coming. Even when Confederate soldiers began their bombardment of Fort Sumter, nobody believed that conflict was inevitable. The north was so unprepared for the war they had no weapons.

In Washington, in the winter of 1861, Henry Adams, the grandson of John Quincy Adams, declared that “not one man in America wanted the civil war or expected or intended it”. South Carolina senator James Chestnut, who did more than most to bring on the advent of the catastrophe, promised to drink all the blood spilled in the entire conflict. The common wisdom at the time was that he would have to drink “not a thimble”.

The United States today is, once again, headed for civil war, and, once again, it cannot bear to face it. The political problems are both structural and immediate, the crisis both longstanding and accelerating. The American political system has become so overwhelmed by anger that even the most basic tasks of government are increasingly impossible.

He linked to a couple of reliably lefty publications that have recently raised the prospect in scary terms, and it’s certainly true. I’ve seen quite a few similar articles myself. He also noted one of the questions plaguing this emerging theme, specifically the lack of some single, dividing issue that would rend the nation into two warring camps the way that slavery did during our original civil war. (There were more factors than just slavery at play, but that was indeed a factor and the one the history books cite almost exclusively.)

We don't have a pure democracy, we have a Democratic Republic. But the Electoral College has almost nothing whatsoever to do with that. We have a Democratic Republic because that it what is designed in the Constitution. The EC is an unnecessary and cumbersome addition that was put in as part of the many revisions necessary to get all the State's approval of the the Constitution.
