My answer would be different as I'm Christian, however here's my Atheist answer: The purpose would be the same as any other natural process which occurs in the universe.. The same purpose as gravitational attraction, the same reason for the nuclear fusion in a star, etc. Basically no reason.. It just happens. Or to summarize: (*)(*)(*)(*) happens. Thus you make your own meaning. Which you have done, and I like it actually.
Utilitarian yes, but hardly purpose. Perhaps your decision to enjoy Life gives you direction on how to use it as if it had no purpose. This of course is belied when most of one's life may be hardship, with little time for "fun." The only true purpose of life is survival. Our Instinct for Survival is so strong and purposeful that one struggles to survive under the worst conditions.
Maybe my look at things is different, as I don't see it as a great purpose to please somebody as an Atheist. Life to me has a beginning and end, and the purpose of the time in between is more just an approach according to what you think is right. So my approach is to have fun. Enjoying myself and others. If others enjoy my company because I tell a stupid story I have more fun, because eventually they tell a story too. This to me is having fun. No matter who is around you, just make the most of your time and enjoy as much as possible of it... Since I do not believe in an immortality of the soul, I figure I have to hurry up with the fun part. I have a hand-full decades and that's that.
Life is about puzzling over life, apparently. Our pre-existence/post-existence does not occasion such curiosity as does the fleeting intermission.
Theres no meaningful ultimate purpose to life gods or not stuff just is You can have personal meaning you give to life about what satisfies you and that is also unaffected by there being gods or not Your personal purpose can involve serving a god you believe in though whether its real or not
The purpose of life is the same as it is for everything else: to become something more complex. When hydrogen and oxygen combine they produce water. Where did common soil dirt come from? It's a complex substance created from a multitude of simpler particles. We can't live without it.
We come and we go away for a while as we die, sooner or later. But after we are gone, the generations of mankind continue on in our absence. This stream of life after death is why we must survive. Carried in the blood of the generations that live on are the genes which float in the Human Gene Pool of these living people. The Gene which contained the codes that built us once remain with the living. At some time in the future, our moment comes, when we will be Born Again. This is hard to believe now, because we can not gain entrance into the Unconscious mind where the memories of previous lives exist. But as the living generations grow, develop, and mature the next step in the evolution of our species will open up the Unconscious mind to us, and we shall remember: The Bible explains this concept of Life-After-Death in one concise and short paragraph: Revelation 21:4-5 And God, (blessing them with Total Phylogenetic Consciousness: [Carl Jung]), shall wipe away, (in their awakened Unconscious Mind: [Freudian Hypothesis]), all tears from their eyes, (for life is a genetically remember able, a continuum, we shall remember from one generation to the next living generation); and, (in genetic memories of prior existences held in our Unconscious Mind) there shall be no more death... (For we shall not all "sleep:" [1Co15:51], but total phylogenetic Consciousness will have evolved), neither sorrow... (For we, individually, are part of a living continuum of our own past, flowers upon our genetic vine), nor crying,.. (for we are happy in these revelations of reconstitution from our human gene pool), neither shall there be any more pain, (as men will have neurological control, a self-hypnotic ability to stop the nerve signals to the brain),... for the former things (in Modern Homo sapiens paradigm of the life experience) are passed away. And he, (the Christ, the ancient, phylogenetic, Collective Unconscious Mind in their own Kingdom within), that sat upon the throne (within the kingdom of the evolving Homoiousian sapiens' brain: [Luke 17:21]) said, Behold, (in this way, through evolution: [Gen 9:11-18]), I make all things (in human experience) new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true, (i.e.; words of Christ himself, who is the experiential presence of Truth in us, rational, the Unconscious mind), and (worthy of) faithful (belief).
Exactly right. We are becoming the Collective Unconscious mind. As we add our own Unconscious input into the sum of all others people, a Collective Awareness is preparing to wake up, which is manifesting as ancient of ancients. The Third Eye of our own Unconscious mind which has been gentically storing and recording our life experience is awkening us to its presence. This is the Grand Olde Man of the Zorah idea, where individual men will all hear the same voice and work together in harmony and love as we grow as a species into the far future as companion to the ever changing and unfolding Reality which is almighty. We know our own individual past, and the phylogentic past of our whole species and perhaps beyond.
instinctive (natural) kind of like breathing; auto your parents, grandparents and lineage since the beginning of time procreated (cell division), for you to be here. They did survive: YOU!
As Richard Dawkins opined in The Selfish Gene, living entities are vehicles for the gene's perpetuation. From our perspective, we are each a fortuitous confluence of cells and, if we are inclined to indulge our egos and imagine that every transient individual and his loved ones exhibit an integrity that is forever, eternally arrested at some arbitrary, favourable stage of development between birth and decrepitude, that's a harmless indulgence our genetic overlords will not begrudge us. "Go forth and multiply," is their only encoded injunction. Otherwise, we're free to wing it.
Neither short nor concise nor easy to read..... it would be just plain silly to have to go through this life to get to some other life....why not just be put into the other life.....and then we could ask the purpose of THAT life - - - Updated - - - Doesn't answer the question: Why?
Obviously you are a nincompoop that doesn't know what the concept of collective unconscious is and refuses to learn.
After a while exposure to excessive nincompoopism starts to abrade the brain. We recommend the ig function.
The purpose of life in this planet earth is to figure out a true religion to believe. An atheist is lying in a hospital dying of old age. He knows that he will be gone soon. He thinks that he has lived long enough. Now he's in a state of peace now. Where does his peace come from ? Is it because he has no religion, or is it because he has faith that life won't continue after death that he doesn't need to worry about. Where does his this faith come from ? Perhaps it is the fallacy that the absence of evidence becomes the evidence of absence upon which his faith is built. Now get back to the purpose of life, perhaps it's something like this, You choose consciously a religion among the many, or to sub-consciously build your own based on a fallacy. And ironically the faith/religion built this way is never evidenced as it is built based on the absence of evidence.
I like how you casually create a strawman and then move on to the purpose of life. The atheist doesn't have faith in there being nothing he simply knows there is no reason to believe in there being something. Speaking for myself I would do the same on my death bed as I do now, focus on the life I live/lived rather than allowing myself to be consumed by the fear of death. Why fear the only thing we can't do anything about?
Now, it could perhaps be that your neighbour calls 911 to report that a massive buffalo herd has run thro' his house, and trampled his petunia bed besides. The cops will come. They will take the statement; they will be looking about for evidence. They will ask you if you saw anything; they might even do a helicpoter recon. Might. But they will for sure note that there are no hoofprints, no lingering smell; no buffalo chips, nothing amiss in the house. No evidence at all, of this purported herd of wild Bison bison. The cops will huddle about whether this is a prank call, or if they need to transport your neighbour to the booby hatch. IF he starts in on them about their "absence of evidence" bit is a logical fallacy, they will for sure take him to the booby hatch.
One thing you can say for the theists / fundamentalists. They know more about atheists than the atheists do and they know more about science than any scientist and they know more theology than any theist. Remarkable bunch, they are.
Yes, they are a part of your own genetic vine that connects you and them back through time during which Instincts and other metabolic and immunological development evolved and were passed on into future generations. But the personal interest in this culminates with the realization that deep in the Unconscious, all this has beenstroed inside your your own head. That day will come when people will remember that they were born Again.
LOL The puirpose of you life in the next five minutes would be exactly to survive had agun been pointed at your head by someone contiplating your death perhaps in a robbery. If your purpose to life were not exactly as I say, to survive by any means necessary, you would be an insane suicide bomber in the making. But man also has the purpose that those he loves also survives as we observe in the Mother's Instinct. There, one's own death can be acceptable in order that another survives. The purpose of Life is survival, de facto.
Yep. Survival is attested to at by every cell in our body, and in every living organism. This is at the most fundamental root of Evolution, where mutations are keyed by stress. We see cockroaches build immunity against insecticides simply because they have the same capacity as viruses still inherent in their genetic make up. The will to survive is the life force.
Biologically speaking, the purpose of life is to pass on as much of our DNA as possible and to ensure the survival of those genes. Spiritually speaking... as a Buddhist, I believe that the purpose of human life is twofold. I believe that our fundamental purpose is to begin by understanding who we are - to constantly strive to learn who we are as a unique individual, and as we come to understand more and more clearly who we are, to be true to our nature and grow into the best "us" we can possibly be; and, as we develop that understanding and blossom in our personal growth, to love others without condition or judgment, to share with them everything of ourselves that we have learned and developed, and through our love help them to better understand who they are - so that they, in turn, can grow and love and share their love with others in their lives, to help them create an atmosphere that allows for their own personal growth.
I agree. I add that the method by which this is being accomplished is that our mind is collecting and storing the factual evidence of past experiences all of which are stored inside the Unconscious mind. This is as you say a genetic process, where the DNA forms the codes that will control the inter-neural networks that rebuild the ancient memories of our whole species. These memories are "installed" as a part of every brain in the new born babies which physically will be different from us today, but contain the mental or "spiritual," i.e., non-material essence of memories. These memories will at some point become available to us. As a Buddhist, you are aware that evidence of this gradual awakening into the Consious mind of powers and knowledge held in the Unconscious mind have already been experience by the Tibetian monks. Right?
