Trump is very confused when it comes to his border wall

First, let us return to his campaign promise. What did Trump actually say? "I will build a great great wall on our southern border and I’ll have Mexico pay for that wall." Today, Trump seems to have forgotten the Mexico part. The campaign promise is already busted because Mexico is not going to pay for it. That should have been obvious from the start, but his fans and far right protagonists believed him.

He has even forgotten what he said a little over two weeks ago. “And I am proud. I’ll tell you what. I am proud to shut down the government for border security, Chuck." An American television audience heard that statement, but Trump can't recall it because now he and the White House are blaming Nancy Pelosi. Yes, I know that sounds ridiculous but it is what it is.

“My gut was that (Schumer) was really interested in doing a deal and coming to some sort of compromise. But the more we’re hearing this week is that it’s Nancy Pelosi who’s preventing that from happening,” Mick Mulvaney said, alleging that if Pelosi “cuts a deal with the president of any sort before her election on January 3rd she’s at risk of losing her speakership, so we’re in this for the long haul.” That is preposterous. Just ask Schumer. She can't lose the speakership. No one is running against her. Also, the Democrats are solidly behind Pelosi and Schumer. Mulvaney was lying, a common practice in the Trump White House. They learned from the master.

On Wednesday Vice President Mike Pence told Senate Majority Whip John Cornyn that Trump would sign “a clean CR.” The agreement was announced by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and the Senate quickly passed a bill that would fund the federal government through Feb. 8, averting the scheduled partial shutdown. The Senate passed the legislation by voice vote late Wednesday, and the House was expected to take it up on Thursday. Congressional leaders said they expected Trump to sign it before the shutdown deadline.

Unfortunately, Trump changed his mind on Thursday, embarrassing the political leadership of his own party. Hence, the government shutdown we have today.

Now Trump is threatening -- again -- to close the southern border. “We will be forced to close the Southern Border entirely if the Obstructionist Democrats do not give us the money to finish the Wall & also change the ridiculous immigration laws that our Country is saddled with,” Trump tweeted Friday.

Exempt a bona fide national security threat, there is a serious question as to whether he can legally do it. Then there is the practical question of how to do it. Is he going to station troops along the 2,000 mile long border? Do we even have that many troops? Then there is the economic question. Closing the southern border would cause an economic disaster.

Of course, Trump is just confused. He can't and he won't close the border. That is just red meat for his dwindling base.

In the meantime, the Trump shutdown continues with no end in sight.

So. Democrats want an open border? Am I understanding you correctly?

We keep hearing about walls being old technology. I have been doing a little research. I haven't been able to find a single place where a wall is not used when there is a serious effort to keep people in or out of a location where the entire boundary is not under continuous direct surveillance. The classic case are penitentiaries.

 

The wall is no different from anything else Trump is confused about.

If the border wall was needed...you would have the GOP leadership running on Trump's wall.

Republicans don't want to spend the money to fully fund Trump's wall.

There is NO WALL PLANS.

Congress is over giving Trump money for his wall.

We have all had to train our toddlers when no means no.

 

If he gets the Wall Funded and they start building it by 2020 he will have my vote and if he has to up the ante by cracking down on the border then fine. True he can't likely seal it but he could demand every person and vehicle be checked slowly and carefully checking trucks contents by emptying them and make re-entry very, very slow. That should be legal.

You don't get it Trump doesn't care he wants The Wall so they better fund it or else this could be a long shut down. What is the issue its ONLY $5 billion take it out of the military budget and put it on the Wall as a matter of national security.

 

In a practical sense...how do you 'close' a border?

 

Don't most illegals come here legally, often flying in, and then overstay?

 

Ask North Korea.

 

That is the worse argument, ever. Don't lock the doors to the bank because most of the money is stolen through fraud.

 

Sorry, we're not using minefields and machine guns.

 

The border has hardly been left wide open. There are barriers. There are agents patrolling it. Worry about reality which is immigrants coming in legally and overstaying. That's the real problem. Don't worry about campaign promises that sound good and are designed to gin up the base.

It is all a real problem. In spite of your "There are barriers. There are agents patrolling it." there are around 50,000 a month who are apprehended on our side of the border.. That does not include those who are not apprehended. It is nearly a win win situation for the illegals. If they cross and are not caught, they are then free to go anywhere in the US and will generally be left alone. Those that are caught must be housed and go before a judge which could take months or immediately returned.. Most likely they will be let go and told to reappear and many won't.

If they cannot get across the wall, they are not a problem for the US and ultimately, they would quit trying.

A wall by itself is not sufficient. It will take a wall plus sensors and manpower. The wall slows them down. The sensors detect them and the border agent intercept them before they get to this side of the border.

Digest this. Fifty thousand a month. Six hundred thousand a year. Not including those who are not apprehended. Probably close to a million total. The numbers are staggering.

 

When you need to control your border, like any sensible sovereign country, you employ any and all means necessary. One means could be a wall. But those fools who want open borders, allowing criminals and drugs to flow in, will fight against any and all means, especially a wall because a wall is the most effective.

 

Obviously, the 50,000 apprehended doesn't include those not apprehended.

You come up with a way to stop the majority of illegals, which are overstay's, and we'll talk about a few more barriers. Maybe. Until then I see no evidence you're serious about stopping illegals.

 

That should be done also. However, it is a much more difficult problem. We are not allowed to ask someone to prove they are not illegal.

Not to do one because we have difficulty to do both is stupid. For one thing it just encourages more people to cross the border illegally. Apparently the democratic solution is to do nothing because we cannot immediately do it all.

 

Obviously if they're catching 50,000 a month that means they're doing that one. Not to address the more serious aspect of the problem, and concentrate on a campaign promise instead, is what is stupid.

 

Across an unsecure border that allows anyone and everyone to come and go unchecked and unregulated. Democrats are desperate to keep it that way.

They are catching them on our side of the border. That makes it our problem. Stop them before they cross so it is no longer our problem.

 

They are totally cool with their being a constant flow of people coming and going unchecked and unregulated and operating out of sanctuary cities.

 

Deport them.
