And what happens when the Russians do the same to our jets? These aren't Cossacks on horses....they have state of the art technology and are the only ones still launching men into space. (a tradition they started, if you remember?)

You guys are starting to sound like the guys back in the 50s and 60s who talked of "limited war"....Herman Kahn and Edward Tellar.....all of whose scenarios eventually led to "TOTAL war" and the Northern Hemisphere becoming a very quiet neighborhood for the next 10,000 years.

We regularly have Russian jets approaching the UK. We simply send up our own Air Force and they go. It's cat and mouse. Shooting down one of their aircraft would simply cause more tension, and heavens knows there's enough tension in the world now. One day they will slip up. Perhaps you should have drones floating around, and warn them. If they lose a jet you only use a drone.

I have a friend - Zxzkzzxywx - from the Alpha Centauri system - whose 'people/creatures' are in the United Federation of Galaxies (UFaG in human terms). It is generally agreed amount the galaxies in this Federation that their is only one insane race in the whole of the known Universe. It's situated in what we call the Milky Way Galaxy, Sol sun system. The locals know it as Earth. UFaG is just waiting for man to destroy his planet and they will take over and reuse it. A pulse weapon on this level would be localized, in other words a plane would have to be near a ship to be effected by it....and our military planes are not buzzing Russian ships, they are buzzing ours.

You get close enough, and aim a pulse at the airplane in the hopes the electronics go haywire causing loss of control...ideally a flame-out.

Teach them a lesson to stop buzzing our ships in International waters without the drama of launching a missile.

An EMP pulse device would have enough plausible deniablity, to keep them guessing.

One of the relevant sections: "requiring aircraft commanders to use the greatest caution and prudence in approaching aircraft and ships of the other party and not permitting simulated attacks against aircraft or ships, performing aerobatics over ships, or dropping hazardous objects near them".

That is what you call informed logic?? The Russians are still using the oldest rocket designs but that they still work doesn't prove their advanced technology.

As to what would happen if our pilots disobeyed orders and flew thirty feet from a Russian plane: our pilots would be fired. I can't remember the last time our planes buzzed a Russian ship but doing that would be risky.

Although the fly bys were not overt attacks they were the Russian military taking military actions against us. This was not pilots ricking multimillion dollar jets for fun. It is an ongoing strategy of intimidating 0's military.

 

Just to clarify what standard we are going by:

Bush withdrew from the ABM Treaty saying it didn't apply because it was signed by the Soviet Union and the Soviet Union no longer exists. So why would this not be the same situation?

Ok Russia isn't going to use Nuclear Weapons on shooting down of a Russian jet. No, they'd use nuclear weapons when their armies get annihilated by one after crossing the Rhine into French territory. But that occurs a few steps after shooting down the jet.

The next immediate Russian step from that is to sink the ship that attacked their aircraft. To which we respond by attacking the airfield that launched the fighters that sunk the ship that shot down the jet. To which they respond by...

They're not going to do anything. They're not going to sink any ship, no airfields are going to get attacked, nor are they not going to invade Western European. If we shoot down a Russian airliner by mistake, then yea maybe something might happened. But, Russia is going to go to open conflict over a one Russian fighter jet harassing American aircraft or ships. There is precedent for it too; Turkey. They shot down a Russian jet, Russia did nothing. The term is called proportional response.

Reagan cut and ran from Lebanon the second it got difficult.
