International law requires that you refrain from restricting refugees who are crossing your country to reach another country in which they wish to seek asylum.

Also, why the **** does punishing the Mexican and the U.S. economy result in any sort of meaningful immigration policy?

Trump's proposed tariffs on Mexico would be biggest tax hike in almost 30 years: report

A couple of updates to this story:

First, the acting DHS secretary got asked why punishing Mexico's economy would not make the immigration issue worse. He could not explain how the policy is supposed to achieve the goal. But to be fair to him, no one can.

Second, a report has come out to show that Trump's tariff on Mexico would amount to the biggest tax increase in 30 years.

About half of your Democratic Presidential candidates seem to believe in open borders.

Who is "them" in this scenario? The Mexicans? Yes it's clearly a hostile act committed by them to us. The "people?" No it's not a hostile act from their point of view, they just want a better deal.

That is a perception with no basis in fact.
Yes, Mexico is them. They want a better deal than what? NAFA or the Trump deal that is basically the same. Trump goes on and on how we are taken advantage of and yet gives us the same treaty with a different name.

This isn't about NAFTA, or trade, it's about using one of the few levers the President has to bring Mexico to the table. We can't treat them like a normal country since they committed a hostile act of flooding our borders.

Trump is using trade to address immigration.

He will end up with neither.

I think Mexico is making a good faith effort to shift policy from what it's new liberal president tried initially. But it may be that Trump thinks his base will be more energized by blowing NewNafta and blaming brown people.

Wild guess on my part. I don't think the tariffs are aimed at Mexico. I think they are aimed at the house of representatives. I think he is trying to motivate the dems in the house to fix the immigration laws. I doubt it will work. Importing future voters is more important than anything else to them.

There are good reasons for letting MX citizens cross into the US, both economically and politically they help the MX govt. What is the reason for allowing non MX citizens to cross thousands of miles of MX territory? I recall the MX govt even gave them transit visas.

The MX govt gets lots of cash from the MX human and drug smuggling cartels. Trump is imposing the tariff so the pressur from MX citizens becomes more important then the cartel bribes.

Mexico has been acting like an enemy of the USA.
Why should America trade with any enemy nation?

Trading with enemy nations like Mexico, China and Russia is usually a mistake.

Trump is literally, at this very moment, trying to get a new massive trade deal with Mexico, ratified.

Your opinion is the reason why there is absolutely zero reason for any international trading partner to trust the U.S. while Trump is in office.

Mexico is a hostile nation. Enemy nations should never be our "trading partners".

The United States has exponentially more resources to handle illegal immigrants within its borders. And yet, the U.S. has an interdiction rate of about 75%. That means that roughly 200,000 successfully evade arrest getting into the United States every year.

And now, Trump is actively punishing the Mexican economy at a time when apprehension of Mexican immigrants are near a 40 year low. So guess what happens to Mexicans who are no longer able to succeed in their own country? They are going to join the Central Americans trying to get into the United States.

Republicans are currently working on methods to curtail Trump's use of tariffs.

But if your theory is correct and Trump is hurting the U.S. and Mexican economy specifically to try and encourage House legislators to pass immigration reform, then he is an even bigger dumbass.
