Of course. people are not rats- there is the mental capacity of reason. Still, it is logical to say that if a person is sufficiently frustrated with failure, they may give up easier. However there is another side to this- "That which does not kill us makes us stronger". What that means in that failure toughens us, makes us more resilient and often more determined.
Often the children of wealth and success are weak- they get addicted to drugs and behave as if life isn't worth living. Many commit suicide, when it appears they have everything to live for. Often the children of poverty do just the opposite- they succeed. Immigrants who come here looking for opportunity often come from terrible oppression, but they bring determination to succeed- determination that exceeds those who have grown up here in a land of plenty, yet think they have no opportunity. They are successful when we are not, because they have that vision; because they haven't been convinced that they are powerless. .

Becoming strong is the process of proving yourself to yourself; of discovering you own power- power that nobody can give to you; power that already exists inside you, waiting for you to discover and take control of to take charge of your life and your destiny. That is a major challenge of life for everyone- rich or poor, educated or ignorant. Surprisingly, success in this respect relates to individual persistence and spirit, and that is something that comes from within. Society neither gives it nor takes it away.

We do know that society promotes dependence, by providing support that people should rely on themselves to provide, and by promoting the idea that everything that happens to us is due to some outside force- and thus, we have no power. If you are convinced you have no power..... you have no power, because you are unwilling to seek it out. It's easier to blame others than to challenge ourselves- that is unfortunately a common human weakness. The problem is, our society is now endorsing it and enabling it

Liberalism IS promoting dependence and weakness as a social norm. While that does not take away your power- is does prevent you from understanding that you have it and what you must do to take charge of it, and lacking that understanding- surrendering control of your own destiny. Spend your life blaming others for what they can't do anyway... make you happy and whole.

The question is one that each person must ask of themselves. Will I run my own life- Will I be responsible for my own choices, my own consequences, my own freedom? Or, will I depend on society to do that for me?

Accepting that responsibility is what gives you control over the things you actually have the power to control- and relieves you of the responsibility to control things you never had the power to control in the first place. It's the difference between being a man- or not; being weak or strong in character and spirit. It has nothing to do with rats.

Most of everything about a person is determined by genetics, and intelligence is no different. I agree and understand that culture influences intelligence too, but to dismiss genetics completely is false. Culture and genetics matter.

They see poor as a socio-economic status that can be fixed by throwing money at it. Not true.

Poor is a state of being that results from poor as a state of mind. Poor people don't believe in themselves or their ability to succeed - all to often poor is a result of laziness - the fastest way to make a poor person collapse is to throw some responsibility at them. That's why drug addiction and alcoholism are rampant among the lower class - if you don't feel good about yourself, if you revel in self-pity, you will self medicate to feel good.

The best remedy for poor children is a good education where they are judged by their merits - at worst, you end up with poor adults who are equipped to succeed on a level playing field.
The best remedy for poor teens is a part time job - they can learn the true value of a buck and decide at that time whether they want to put the effort into growing out of poor.
The best remedy for poor adults is work.

 

I know. Liberals promote social programs like affirmative action to make the weaker members of society equal to the higher members. I am starting to believe that Thomas Jefferson was wrong in promoting a democracy for the masses. We should have had a democracy with an aristocracy instead. Alexander Hamilton was correct.
