Confused? Can't keep your own nonsense straight? What is keeping "poor people" from voting, according to your pretzel logic?

We think minorities are too stupid to navigate even the most basic requirements of life in America.

The only reason I can think of to object to all reasonable means to ensure that the vote is honest and free of shenanigans is that those objecting want those who vote illegally to be able to do so.

But I'm one of those old fashioned folks who thinks voting should be a patriotic trust and honor. People should get themselves down to the clerk's office to register or, if they are without transportation, call to have an official from the clerk's office come to them. They should register a full two to six weeks before the election and should show positive photo ID and proof of residence in order to register. And they should get themselves to the polls on election day and again present positive photo ID to prove they are the person who is registered to receive a ballot.

I don't WANT people unwilling to do that to vote. I don't WANT people to vote who are given a slip of paper with a name written on it and paid $5 to go in and register to vote at the polling place and then cast a ballot for the name on the list. I don't WANT people to vote who were signed up by some partisan activist group with no concern for whether the people are citizens, residents, or have a clue what they are signing up for.

People have to have positive ID to buy a plane ticket or rent a car, to apply for food stamps, welfare, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and in most states to buy alcohol or cigarettes or nail polish or certain OTC drugs or a gun or a cell phone, to pick up a prescription, to visit a casino, to get a marriage license, to apply for a job, to rent an apartment or apply for a mortgage. All states provide photo ID for citizens who, for whatever reason, don't get one for one of those other reasons.

But it somehow disenfranchises people if they have to show that they are who they say they are and eligible to vote before they can vote?

Apparently not. Once again, what is keeping "poor people" from voting?

The IDs are free and will be available to voters who do not yet have a viable form of ID, such as a driver’s license, a concealed handgun license, a passport or military ID.

Applicants must go to a DPS driver’s license office to apply and show proof of citizenship. The IDs can only be used to vote, and are not acceptable forms of personal identification for other purposes. To qualify, applicants must be U.S. citizens and Texas residents and be eligible to vote in Texas. They must prove it by showing a valid voter registration card or submitting a voter registration application when applying for the card. Most documents will be valid for six years, though they do not expire for citizens 70 or older.

How is it a poll tax if it is free?

Crazy how the left is so adamant about protecting it's uneducated, uninformed, lazy voter base.

    - - - Updated - - -

Not sure if they don't see it... or simply believe their party is stupid enough to fall for it.

I think like them, I have my money on the latter.

This thread is a good example.

More evidence voter ID laws don't suppress minority voting

But, but, but ... voter ID! Minority-voter suppression!

    Oops. From CNN:

"A new Census Bureau report provides more evidence that the changing demographics of the United States are having a deep impact at the voting booth.

"The report on the 2012 election found that for the first time on record, black voters turned out to the presidential polls at a higher rate than whites. More than 66% of eligible blacks voted in the presidential contest that pit President Barack Obama against Republican nominee Mitt Romney. Only 64.1% of whites turned out to vote." (link and emphasis added)

The CNN story doesn't examine these turnout rates in light of voter ID laws. Critics say these laws are designed to suppress turnout among minority voters. Never mind that, as the Supreme Court has found, there is no evidence that these laws lead to such suppression. Never mind, too, that suggesting minorites won't or can't be bothered to obtain an ID in order to vote is an awfully strange way of defending them.

So, I did look at the turnout rates in states with photo ID laws for voters. And, contrary to what you may have been told, voter ID laws are not suppressing minority turnout. Unless, that is, they're simply suppressing white turnout even more.

According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, four states (including Georgia) have "strict" photo ID requirements. Another seven have photo ID requirements. Here's how black turnout compared to white turnout in those 11 states:
•In five (Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Michigan and Tennessee) black turnout surpassed white turnout.
•In four (Kansas, Louisiana, New Hampshire and South Dakota) there was no statistical difference between black and white turnout rates.
•In two (Hawaii and Idaho) white turnout surpassed black turnout.

It's a bit harder to judge Hispanic turnout in the same way, because of the way the data are presented. But here's what we can say, comparing photo-ID states to the national average gap of between (non-Hispanic) whites and Hispanics of 16.1 percentage points:
•In three (Florida, Georgia and New Hampshire) the gap was definitely smaller than the national average.
•In five (Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan and Tennessee) the gap was reported as a range, 15 to 19.9 percentage points, that means it could have been smaller than the national average but also could have been larger.
•In three (Kansas, Louisiana and South Dakota) the gap was definitely larger than the national average.

So, in states with photo-ID requirements: Black turnout surpassed or equaled white turnout in the vast majority of them (9 of 11), while Hispanic turnout appears to have fared better or perhaps no worse than white turnout, compared to the national average, in almost as many of them (8 of 11).

Mr. Garcia sounds fishy to me. Anyone who wants to vote, and is low on cash should be seeking a FREE EIC.

"Mr Garcia" sounds like someone we dont want voting, and the reason we have ID laws going into place.
