You are mistaking the fact that “sedentary life style will kill you long before smoking will”.
That’s you exaggerating and not even referencing your own study. It’s a false choice if you don’t accurately combine obesity, sedentary life style and certain areas. Why ? Because there are many rural areas where people eat well, have no formal exercise program and live much longer then smokers. You’re generalities don’t comport with the studies.

I do not know that there is any conclusion that smoking will without any doubt shorten your life by ten years, the best one can say is that excessive smoking may harm your health, it may not, moderate smoking seems to be the best if you choose to smoke though as with most things

just like excessive sun, excessive alcohol, excessive exercise, excessive sugar, the list goes on

non-smokers would love to claim the title of longest living person, they have not yet, and that may be due to the stress relief of smoking, who knows, maybe quitting smoking will make one become obese and stress them and they will live 10 years shorter, all we can do is decide for ourselves, as life is a gamble, one could choke on a glass of water in the morning

the government forcing cigarette companies to add carpet glue to all cigarettes sold was wrong, consumers shoudl decide, the government made smoking more harmful

I do not smoke, so I am not consuming it, but I can still care about the health of others, if I smoked I woudl make my own

"During Prohibition, Federal Chemists Used Poison to Stop Bootlegging"

    https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/poison-alcohol-prohibition

"The government could ban the brewing of beer, but not the production of industrial alcohol, which was used to make everything from perfume to paint. So when bootleggers redistilled industrial alcohol to make it drinkable, the federal government responded by requiring manufacturers to add in increasing amounts of poison."

    anti-alcohol folks were evil too

or they walk outside and talk and smoke with friends, smokers often tend to work harder so they can get time for a smoke, non-smokers often gab and work slower as they do not have that extra motivation, really depends on the person

no reason to vilify smokers, we make our choice, they make theirs, I think business should be able to decide if people smoke at their business, and consumers decide to go there or not

government propaganda has some people as afraid of consuming fat as they are of cigarette smoke - propaganda works

Make no mistake, it took a long time to factually convince enough people in leadership that smokers not only caused their own demise and upped everyone’s insurance rates but contributed to the 20% of non smokers who also got smoking related diseases due to the ingestion of second hand smoke in their homes and at work places. The selfishness of many smokers knows few bounds when it comes to the ingestion of their habit forming drug of choice. Let’s not forget, if they had their way, with few exceptions, they would still be blowing smoke in the faces of those who practiced better health habits in the work places, at home and any closed environment.

Like any drug addict, smokers practice their consumption of their drug of addiction at the expense of others. Don’t fool yourself as addicts often do, you’re not working harder just to save time to smoke, you’re working harder to feed your addiction which still costs non smokers increased healthcare cost and lost income of their own. Family members also deal with your deseases as ultimately, you become poor providers and more of a drag on the healthcare system during the last few years of your shortened life then non smokers. That includes the unfortunate 20% of non smokers you drag along with you into the treatment centers.

    That’s your addiction talking.

Thanks again for your time & information.
I've used KT tape for lower back pain & while it was only slightly effective, it is a welcome alternative to NSAIDs which I rarely take because they are rough on your stomach & kidneys.

I don't know if you've had Epidural Cortisone Injections (I've had 3) but I found them to be only minimally effective & not worth the risk.
Some Dr.s suggest that multiple cortisone injections can detrimentally affect hips & knees

I don't need to invest in a back brace as I've already got 3 different types of them but only use them when my lower back is especially inflamed.

The information on swimming properly was new to me & I've bookmarked the web address you cited. Now, I just need to let the wound on my Charcot foot heal which may take some time even with the new Orthotic shoe inserts I just picked up.
Meanwhile, I'll just continue my existing exercise routine & look forward to getting back to blacksmithing when it cools off.
I've almost completed a wrought iron African elephant & have started on an Art Deco fireplace screen I designed for a client.

Again, I am grateful for your taking the time to relay such promising information & hope I can reciprocate in the future.

    Many thanks & best wishes.

To put off the inevitable, your own death, by 10 years, might actually be some sort of mental illness.

I know people who stress out living 10 years longer. They devote their life to living longer, and yet when death comes, they are never ready, most of them, unless in extreme pain and suffering.

It is the quality of life that should matter, IMO. Enjoying it, regardless of how much of it you get. My own life would have been less enjoyable if not for some bad habits. Eating tofu and only veggies would be personally a hellish existence. I would not want to extend that existence by 10 years.

No one is getting out of this place alive, and to be obsessed with a long life is such a waste of time. I would not trade my own life for some of those people obsessed with living 10 years longer. And that is the other side of the coin folks.

Cowards die many times before their deaths. The valiant never taste of death but once. Of all the wonders I yet have heard, it seems to me most strange that men should fear. Seeing that death, a necessary end, will come when it will come. I think this is the sane manner of seeing all of this. So enjoy it to the max, be kind to others, and live it to the fullest no matter how long or short it is.

Those who smoke and demonstrate longevity are fortunate in having good genes and otherwise probably practice reasonably good health habits. Such persons have competent metabolism that can handle the smoking load. They live long despite their indulgence in smoking and in some areas despite excessive dietary fat, etc. (e.g. some Eskimo populations).

The somewhat less fortunate ones who don't have ideal metabolism are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of smoking and thus incur illness and reduced lifespan. For most people, smoking is a subtraction from health in the manner suggested by dagosa.

There are various locations around the globe that sport above-average numbers of centenarians but in some such places the habits plainly contradict some of the no-no dietary issues and health practices. All of them seem to have one thing or another in their favor, such as infrequent consumption of red meat, clean air, reliance on veggies & fruit free of pesticides, physically active lifestyles, and strong social/family/community cohesion.

I agree that people with bad genes or health issues, especially obesity or asthma shoudl probably not smoke, should not do a lot of things healthy people do

I do not smoke, or go to the beach all the time and get too much sun, I don't eat tons of sugar, the list goes on, if your gonna do these things, moderation is key

when I was in high-school a kid died of a heart attack while running in practice, great shape, life just sometimes gets the better of us

we are all gonna die some time, and much of it is determined by our genes sadly, though things done to access can shorten ones lifespan, the body is strong and can heal from most things just fine in small quantities - most things anyways, people could die from a glass of water or even have a heart attack getting out of bed in the morning even though doing everything right

the most important thing is not being sedentary most of the time and eating healthy most of the time

woudl be a interesting to see DNA tests on people that live to old age that are smokers vs the ones that die young from lung issues (smokers or not), see if they can find the genes that help improve lung health, could lead to breakthroughs to improve everyone's lung health

Before long they will probably be able to print you a new set of lungs.

There is no good reason to smoke. But I do feel for those who are highly addicted. I used to smoke and quitting about killed me. I have never really stopped wanting a cigarette. At one point I had quit for two years. Even after two years I found myself following smokers just to smell the smoke. :D I remember thinking I'd rather die young than live like this!

I also used to smoke, about 10 years ago I switched to ecigs, then worked down the nicotine to nothing and eventually just stopped altogether, it was either that or make my own cigarettes as the new government requirements to add carpet glue to cigarettes caused me breathing issues

I have known many people that quit using ecigs, it surprises me how many anti-smokers are against ecigs, I think they fear the nicotine, but these same people have no issues eating foods with nicotine like Potatoes, Cauliflower, Peppers, Tomatoes and Teas

    https://testcountry.com/blogs/nicotine/6-common-food-with-nicotine-content

the only reason to smoke is stress relief, you have to weigh the good with the bad though, if your a person that can't smoke moderately and smoke to excess every day, or have other health issues, your gonna have problems, best never to start though, I say the same about drinking alcohol, as you do not know if your gonna be an addict and use to excess or not before hand

back in my day, smoking also helped create connections and thus give you job opportunities as even higher ups smoked in the same spaces, but that is not as true today

As others have pointed out, there has to be a clear indication that someone will make money as a result of the effort; they don't run projects based on good ideas. Since the genome exploration is ongoing, it will likely continue to be fruitful.

At www.genome.gov, about 50 non-rare genetic disease are listed, including autism, crohn's disease, and distinct cancers such as breast, colon, prostate, and skin. At the GARD site of NIH (Genetic and Rare Diseases Info Center), www.rarediseases.info.nih.gov, I saw only one for (L)ung cancer (lung adenocarcinoma). I did not look in other categories besides (T)esticular cancer.

they probably would not get the grants, as the government wants to vilify tobacco at all costs, they only want to pay for studies that give them the results they want

it's like Marijuana, look how hard it is for the government to take that off the scheduled one substance list even though it is a fact that it has medical benifits

    https://www.dea.gov/druginfo/ds.shtml

"Schedule I drugs, substances, or chemicals are defined as drugs with no currently accepted medical use and a high potential for abuse."

Marijuana does not fit the dea's own requirements to be a scheduled 1 substance

The cigarette industry had free reign with no one holding them responsible for poisoning the public for decades. The govt. did next to nothing for all these years while the cigarette industry raked in huge profits while lying and deceiving the public on the dangers of their product. While this was happening, other industries lost. As is usual, it’s the urging of the market that causes the gov. to react. Real estate, insurance companies and anyone who employs smokers suffers financial burdens.
    • Cause you to have a lower resale value on your car
    • Make your home more difficult to sell
    • Make the cost of life insurance more expensive
    • Cause decreased productivity at work

no different then the sugar or alcohol industry, addiction and abuse of many products could harm you

they have actually made new laws so you can't sue the food industry like they did the cigarette industry, corporations learned from that one, and bought new laws

While I only smoked for a decade and was a relatively light smoker with a 5 a day habit it took two years for the nightmares of becoming readdicted to stop. It has been 35+ years since I gave up and I am glad I did when I see those around me who didn't and are now suffering the impact that long term smoking does to your health.

As an ex-smoker I have no problem at all with e-cigs and actually recommend them to anyone still smoking regular cigarettes. I can stand right next to someone smoking an e-cig without any ill effects. The nicotine itself in 2nd hand e-cigs is not enough to cause any problems. It is the carcinogens in regular cigarettes that do all the damage.

any addiction really, even sugar addicts

even after diabetes some can't change their ways

same is true with some smokers, even after lung issues

    alcoholics are the same

we really need to learn how to treat addiction

I think the 2 items that caused most of the gain is the "30 minutes of exercise a day, maintaining a healthy BMI"

the "limiting saturated fat" I am not so sure about. sense that is the bodies preferred way to store extra energy, I think that is a questionable one

not drinking, smoking, eating fruits (sugar), eating red meat (excessive protein) and eating sugar to excess is common sense, moderation of those items does not pose the risk the article is claiming

There are different levels of addictions, often influenced by the genetics of individuals. Like foods laced with HFCs, the cigarette industry has worked long and hard to increase the addiction levels in cigarettes over the decades..

It may be tempting to treat everyone addicted to different substances the same way, but you’d be more successful treating addicts on a case by case basis. There are similarities, but that doesn’t mean an addiction to Bryer’s ice cream has to be addressed the same way as addictions to cigs or opioids.

if being addicted to sugar means you eat so much it damages your health, it's no different then smoking or drinking so much it damages your health, the addiction has to be stopped in order for your health to get better, going cold turkey works for many

sugar is so addictive they have show rats will choose it over cocaine, not everyone is addicted to sugar though, nor smoking, nor drinking - those that are addicted to things effecting their health have a addiction problem that needs addressed

interesting chart on obesity in the USA, when they started replacing fat with sugar and using manufactured oils rather then natural ones, trans fat being the worst of them
    [IMG]

part of the problem is people do not realize they are eating so much sugar as it is in so many things now, if a item says "low fat", it's probably been replaced with sugar

maybe the label shoudl read, "Fat replaced with Sugar" rather then "Low Fat" - sure gives it a different perception doesn't it, how many trying to eat healthy would choose that?

my point on calling sugar addiction a addiction is just to make the point it can be an addiction and when it is, it needs to be treated as such, as physical withdraw symptoms can be real, not just in your head, people need to be aware of that

You can't 'treat' it. The individual must choose to stop.

We can, however, prevent it .. by not raising dysfunctional children, who are then exposed to poor parental models in regards to substance use/abuse. IOW, don't smoke, drink, or do drugs if you have children. And DEFINITELY never teach them (via example or words) that any kind of difficult episode in life can be self-medicated. Even that glass of beer or wine after a hard day at the office, sends the message - loud and clear.
