What is it with 26 - 30 year old adults these days?

Is the young adults, is it their parents?

I took my split of 50 people we had to interview today for a new position. I had 3 the were >45 years of age, 2 in their mid to late 30's, and the remainder being 24-30 years old. The last group had me scratching my head.

None of them, I repeat NONE OF THEM had ever worked anywhere outside of mowing a few lawns, washing a few lawns or some 10 hour per week college provided job. I am amazed as to how many kids graduate college and do nothing or very little up to that point! I asked all 5 why they had so little work experience, all replied that their school and social hours would not allow it.

Needless to say those 5 got tossed out of the running. The group of >45 offers us the best options including what the others interviewed. No wonder there is so much college debt out there, this generation of kids thinks they are too good to work. :wall:

Yeah it's all the stupid millenials fault. The parents who raised them bear no culpability for how they turned out or anything. Don't worry, as a group they are going to be in debt the rest of their lives so we can at least laugh at their misfortune.

Unless Pelosi and Reid types keep getting re-elected, then we all get to pay for it twice

Whatever you think of Pelosi and Reid, they are the only two people right now who are stopping the horrible, horrible Obamatrade deal from passing.

    Were they 'Amish'?

BTW, what were their degrees in? Just out of curiousity if a student had a 2-4 year degree in a subject like "business" or "finance" but no real work experience (outside of part time jobs) would you hire them? Or would you prefer someone with 4-5 years of work experience (even at the entry level) with no college degree?

Hard to say it is all the parents' fault. Some people in some places have trouble finding first jobs in this saturated market. I think people in high school and college think that "extra-curricular activities" are more important than work experience for God knows what reason.

If the 4-5 years is industrial experience we take those people over degrees every time as instant gain is realized. The young adults had degrees in business, Safety and Health, one in process engineering

Arrested development is a natural byproduct of a liberal culture. It's only going to get worse. From a purely sociological perspective, it's interesting to just sit back and watch as every generation gets dumber and more helpless than the last. People two hundred years ago built the foundation for this country without air conditioning. People today can't even figure out how to tie their shoe on their own.

Well there's the catch 22. You could give them work experience, and instead you didn't. Great job. They're not on their way to an endless cycle of never getting hired.

And how are they supposed to prove themselves? My biggest issue with people hiring others is they're looking for 'Good Ol' Bob'. It's a guy who used to work forever at the company and knows it inside and out cause he's worked there for 20 years and is retiring. The employer wants to higher another 'good ol bob' without realizing Good Ol Bob became Good Ol Bob because he was hired as a nobody and became that asset. No one is in the business of fostering long term employment anymore. They just want their good ol bob back instead of investing time and energy to create a newer, better good ol bob.

As well from a hiring standpoint, wouldn't you rather pay lower for someone with no experience and mold them to suit your needs exactly? The long term gain is much more beneficial. Instead you'll pay higher for someone with more experience. That means when raise time comes around, you're still paying more for essentially the same position.

I understand you got (*)(*)(*)(*) to get done RIGHT NOW and you don't want to waste time training someone. However, again, you're playing with a block of pure clay with a freshman. With someone who's been around the block, you might not be able to bull(*)(*)(*)(*) them as easily and they might have picked up quite a few bad habits in their time as well that go against your model of operation. In other words, they've already been molded into something for better or worse.

I'd rather take the clay and shape it into exactly what I need and keep it around for a while.

He said 24-30, not 18 to 24. McDonald's is not looking for 'Good Ol' Bob", they're looking for these kids. So are a lot of entry level jobs. When you get to be 24-30 and never held a job, there's something wrong with you. I wouldn't hire them either. I'll point them to the Wendy's down the street and tell them to come back in 6 months.

There are more ways to gain experience than you think - for example offer to work for just min wage for 6 months and prove yourself, or heck offer to work for free. Or if you're unemployed do volunteer work in your spare time while you search for a job, and use for as personal references on your job resume.

Whether you're employed or not you can do more than just sit on the couch in front of an Xbox and blame your lot in life

Why would you expect him to hire someone who straight up told him they hadn't been looking for work because it interfered with their "social scene"?

I wouldn't think they have a bad work ethic because they wish to also have a personal life. But then again, I'm not a puritan.

I work full time and believe it or not I still have time for a personal life. As much of a shocker as it is, plenty of people work 40 hours a week or more and still have time for hobbies like martial arts, gym memberships, video gaming, or just going to the bar or getting a date on occasion. (And how much of a "personal life" can you have anyway if your only source of income comes from mommy or a food stamp card)?

Do you think a university should accept a student who flat out admits on their college app that they skipped school most of the time because they'd rather stay at home and play video games all day?

Working 40 hours a week instead of voluntarily living off of mommy until age 30 isn't being a puritan. How attractive do you really think that is in the dating scene?

If you're feeling guilty about us having to pay for your food stamp usage maybe you should cut down on the gaming and try getting a job - plus you'd be amazed at how much better it feels to work a solid 8 hours a day, 5 days a week instead of popping zits while sitting in front of a free-to-play MMO game - feeling low in self-esteem every time those hot girls you like turn you down for a date in favor of one of those 'puritan guys' who has a job and his own car (oh the inhumanity!).

Wow, there was so much projection in that post I don't even know where to begin.

You literally painted a picture of who you think I am without one shred of evidence. You saw what I said and then extrapolated my entire life from one sentence, quite falsely I might add.

Puritan lifestyle is literally work and nothing else. Even sex is discouraged in puritan style life. Productivity for the sake of productivity is the only thing in a puritanical society.
We have a obviously been reverting more and more to puritanical society because careers now dictate personal life, which isn't balance. Productivity has been steadily increasing. People now are on a work ball and chain with new cell phone technology. I've gotten calls at 10 pm for a job that's 9-5. I've gotten calls on a weekend where I'm off concerning my 9-5. That's literally free consultation off the clock. What the (*)(*)(*)(*). And interrupting my time off. And I see this becoming more and more commonplace.

My life isn't based on my work and working isn't the only thing that makes me happy. This is completely backwards from puritan style living. It's also relevant to point out that rejection of puritan 'ethics' is what lead to even having weekends to begin with, having paid vacation options, sick days, etc. It was rejection of puritanical society in at least some part.

Unless you're doing exactly what you love and you get paid for it, your job shouldn't be your life, it should just be something you do in order to live the life you want. If i'm working all the time, hating it, losing sleep, etc. then it's time to find a new job. No amount of money is worth it to lose myself.

My point exactly, Good Ole' Bob worked in High School and College learning people skills, reasoning, problem solving skills. Hiring a 30 yeard that has never done a damn thing means a minimum 5 year investment before any return is to be seen. Parents should and need to take charge or in other words, be parents.

This is all very true. I went to school with these kids and they were shocked I could work two jobs. "Where do you find the time?" they asked. "Easy, I don't play Halo".

Which is all good and fine until your cry that the workers need to pay for the non workers out of justice. Theft is justice to your left. Newspeak if I ever heard it. Get your side in line please.
