Calling a Scot Scotch is committing suicide in some parts of Scotland.
English/Scottish as far back as I can trace, but since the paternal family comes from a slave trading city there could be other nationalities involved.

Well dang! I can't 'hazard a guess'? My background is kinda sketchy since I was taken away from my bio mom when I was 9 and placed for adoption....BUT I do remember her saying "I'm German and proud of it!" Then in my teens an older sister found me and told me my poppa was a big, blond Norwegian.....then around 35 yrs later I saw my real mother one more time, asked her about the Norwegian and she said 'yes'. German and Norwegian....well, I was born blue-eyed and blond.

My 2 girls are now doing the ancestry thingy and picking my brain for names from my long ago past.....I think this will get quite interesting and might be related to the queen of England! Hey! Why not?!

There's nothing wrong w/someone wanting to know their ancestry. For many of us, it's a natural curiosity and I think particularly for those of us who were separated from their bio families.

Western and northern European with a splash of Iberian.

    Specifically, Germanic and Celtic.

Sometimes the distinction is not clear, hence the "Scotch-Irish" designation.

All countries are artificial to some extent. It's not as if they are products of nature. They are inventions of the human mind that can only approximate the underlying genetic and cultural complexities of a given society.

And before 1788, America was made up of multiple independent, sovereign states, each with its own unique culture and government.

In fact, virtually every modern nation-state is a consolidated entity that supplanted a wide array of diverse cultures and peoples.

A European with the handle "Gaius Marius" is accusing Americans of having a weird fetish with nobility and ancestry? Really?

    the Scotch-Irish are from Ulster.

Not Scotland. Not Ireland. But Ulster.
