Who said anything about bashing? I was simply curious to know if there are any Americans today who have a strictly Swedish or strictly German lineage, for example.

    Ditto.

I am part Finn and part Turkish.

    Hahahaha. Calm down, m8.

The genealogy book just has a short paragraph at the beginning about my family migrating from Brittney France to Scotland and then on to New Hampshire in 1654. It then begins with my ancestor in New Hampshire and follows on with all succeeding generations. The book never relates whether the family was French, German or what or if living in Scotland they added some Scot blood. I suppose outside of a DNA test I see advertised, I will never know.

My ancestor allegedly can over with William Penn but could have been a shipmate or something. Quaker originally and one relative got kicked out of the church for marrying outside of the church. Only two with the same name arrived in America, 1670 and the 1890's. The first group moved west and fought for the north during the civil war and the second group went mostly south after arriving. There is a black author with the same last name but I don't know her ancestry.

I always joke about this. I have a congenital disease called dupetrens (a coursening of the cartilage in the last three fingers of the hands) and it is considered a Norwegen disease so some of my past relatives were either Vikings or at least raped by them.

I had a father, whose last name originated in Normandy but immigrated to England and thence to the USA. The spelling changes depending on who wrote it down. The house of Burges is alleged to be part of the family tree.

My Stepfather, whose name I have used since I was a child, also came to the USA from England. That name appears in Jamestown VA in 1623.

Both that came over had the same spelling but the next generation spelled it differently. There are English with both spellings.

Vikings, cute. With me, the book spells out everything from 1654 forward and outside of stating the family went from Brittney to Scotland to the U.S., everything is basically black going backwards. Although the book said there were numerous graves with my family name on it in Brittney.

I think if I want to find out anything more, it is a DNA test or one of those companies that do ancestor research. But the gumption was never there or perhaps even the curiosity. It would be interesting though. You seem to know a lot more about ancestors than I and I even have a book on mine.

I would imagine Viking blood is mixed in with quite a lot of us. With all the wars and the different conquests of various nations in Europe since Roman times, I highly doubt there is any of us pure anything.

Far more important than the spelling of one's last name is the firsthand
    accounts of Relatives { Again a Parent or Grandparent or Great Grandparent }
Most jews in this Country had their last name altered. But those same Jews
could probably recount verbatim what their Grandparents and Great Grandparents
went thru.Things such as Old Picture albums or letters or War Experience.
There wasn't any infernal Internet years ago to do what today's nincompoops
feel is so vital.Check out one's last name {surname} and how that relates to them.
What Relates to you is Those Firsthand accounts from Kin { Parents and Grandparents
    and Great Grandparents }.
And another thing.I know this may sound Macabre or almost evil But :
You ... like your Grandparents and Great Grandparents will be SO forgotten
after awhile it may appear as if never living.
Case in Point. My Grandfather ... a very successful and important man in his
    time { Ran a big trucking company with hundreds of employees over the years }
He was a Millionaire in the 40's. Had 2 hunting lodges as well a Mansion and
huge gun collection.I'm sorry to say that I think I heard his name mentioned
just once at Family get togethers after my Grandma passed.before that maybe
a few times in a decade.
Dennis Prager has a theory about this. That no matter how Important and
successful one is in life, chances are You'll be forgotten.Whatever good you did
goes with you to the grave. It may take a couple generation but probably
just one generation.Every Family member eventually becomes forgotten.
That is one of the reasons I started this thread.
    I hate that notion.But ... sadfully it's true.
No matter what greatness one accomplished in Life, generally they will be
    forgotten.As if never existing.
When was the last time anyone was heard mentioning Thomas Edison.

that is 100% false, and of course you cannot prove such a claim.

99% of the Jews I have met in my life, and I have met thousands, do not have Anglicized named.

The following names are in my family alone, and NONE of them have been altered:

Mayer, Levitz, Beckermann, Goldschmidt, Kaplinsky, Steinberg, Ganz, Jung, Maslin, Wolfe, Zimmermann.

The Jews I know are named Abramov, Bendersky, Ganzer, Strauss, Stark, and others.

I have known and met very few Jews who Anglocized their names, but I have met a few.

Most Jews have their European names, intact.

Ever heard of Jon Stewart { The Daily Show } Real Name Jonathan Leibowitz
    Or Bob Dylan { real name Robert Zimmerman }
Or how about Michael Savage { # 3 Talk radio } who is Michael Weiner.
The list among Hollywood types runs about 100 long or more.
From Jack Benny and Milton Berle to Woody Allen,George Burns,Mel Brooks to
name just a few popular names.
The Jewish Hollywood Moguls long ago decided that it would help them
make more money { Gelt anyone ? } if the general public viewed films
as being " Christian ". Thus Samuel Goldfish changed his name to Goldwyn.
Every single one of the original Jewish developers of the movie industry
divorced their jewish wives and married beautiful Christian Starlets.
Those being Jack Warner,David O. Selznick,Harry Cohen and Louis B. Mayer.
Also included are the notable nosejobs for both Jewish Male and female stars.

Hollywood is fake, with fake people.

lots of non-Jews have changed their names, for Hollwood.

I think it refers to Ulster Scots - residents of Ulster, Ireland who trace their heritage back to Scotland (Presbyterians / Protestants / Orangemen). When Americans refer to Scots-Irish heritage, it usually means their ancestors came from Ulster.

I mean - why are you attacking everyone's heritage? You haven't told us yours yet.

Not only the Jews, but many others who immigrated to the United States had a strong desire to "fit in". To that end, they changed or Anglicized their first and surnames. I know a "Jaime" who goes by "Jimmie"; and a "Maroun" who goes by "Mike". Lots of immigrants have real names and American names.

As for noses? I think Adrien Brody is very sexy. People shouldn't chop themselves up.

I am into genealogy in a big way. My people came from England in 1635 - all four grandparents' people were here well before 1700. I was always told I was 100% British (English, Welsh, Cornish, Scottish) with a trace of Norman. However, when I had my DNA tested, I had Portuguese, Spanish, Croatian, Greek, North African - it was really fun. It was a small percentage, but it took me all the way to sub-Saharan Africa.

Which of course makes little to no sense.Hollywood actors are In the
Public eye like nobody's business. They sneeze wrong and the paparazzi
    takes a picture of it.
Their Lives are usually an open book,no matter how private they
feel.It could be why Robin Williams decided to end his life.He no longer
could tolerate being in the Public eye.Yet he had little choice.
Guys like Ted Turner can just retire to his millions of acres { he is the
Largest private landowner in the U.S. } and say the hell with it.
Then there's Robert Redford who seems to have managed it.
    So too with Jane Fonda.
I think it is somewhat sacrilegious to change one's last name for the
sake of Opportunity. But then Catholics see things differently.
One's surname should be venerable. It's not like clothes or hairdo
or a home, cars. We cannot take those things to the grave with us.

I dunno.I guess I can see where a Hollywood Mogul with a name like
Samuel Goldfish might have problems at a cocktail party.
Or someone with the Last Name { Eichelbaum } as Jack Warner.
Then again who knows who Joe Yule Jr. was. How about Mickey Rooney.

Well you do now. Maybe they talked about that with other people, I dunno, around me they mainly talked about other stuff. My grandfather was a naturalist and a philosopher who read very widely to the end of his life. He could go on for hours about Darwin or Martin Buber and he could also talk politics and even sports but no, he never said much about himself. I do remember he said once that reminiscing was a bad habit conversationally, being tiresome to others, so maybe he'd been trained not to .

I was adopted as a baby and just this last year had my DNA tested. I'm in the middle of finding my ancestry out. I knew some info ( the agency had given to my adoptive parents)
I'm so glad I did it.

So in other words, you're black. Look up the "one drop" law if you don't believe me. Don't feel bad though, Octaroons were the most highly prized courtesans there were in old New Orleans.
