Egypt is not subsaharan, Ethiopians speak a semitic language and learned their writing from semites, Mali and Zimbabwe didn't have written languages.[/QUOTE] How could they have centers of learning (universities) if they didn't have a written language? Have you ever heard of Timbuktu? They had one of the greatest universities in the world at one time.

Anyway, the written language in Timbuktu was Arabic, as were most of the scholars. You may remember AQIM destroying, or threatening to destroy, priceless Islamic documents there. I don't remember how that turned out. But it is true, not only the white man, but the semitic one as well, brought knowledge to that benighted continent. The Arabs got their learning from Byzantium first, of course. There have been three main sources of knowledge and wisdom in this world: Europe, specifically Greece, India and China. The European is obviously the best. I admire the Chinese a great deal. The Indians, not so much, but I acknowledge their claim to be a font of knowledge and wisdom. You speak as if there were other "centers of learning" in Africa. Got another?
People have been trying to "get ahead" by working hard since antiquity. This behavior doesn't belong to any particular culture. African-American women attend college at higher rates than any other demographic in the country. So much for your theories.

Do you think the written language is necessary for institutions of learning? What must Alexandria have taken with her in history and flames... Moriah, I wonder if you migrated to the US or perhaps your parents. Your posts are...exceptional here..

I was born and raised in California, educated in the public school system. My parents were born in Oklahoma; they came to California as poor farm workers in the 1930's. Whatever knowledge I have is the result of reading, talking and listening to other people and knowing that one's education never ends. Most of what I know about history/politics/civil rights is from studying on my own; the public schools teach very little in these subjects. Now I am going to go read up on Alexandria since you mentioned it in your post and I'm not familiar with it. P.S. I would think that written language is necessary for institutions of learning. It would be very difficult to memorize everything.

Hellenistic society strived to educate but students didn't carry around books. Oral instruction predated written literature. Moriah, you have an above average IQ. You're always interesting and insightful. Education doesn't impact IQ.
