I wish him luck... honestly, I would love him to address foreign outsourcing and foreign imports, that was why I supported him in the beginning... who knows, maybe he will

Nah, they cap out their white support with white guilt. If they dropped white guilt they'd lose all the whites, LOL!

I really doubt the trade issue is a significant source of help for anyone.

I think there needs to be more focus on our current situation and the realities going forward.

And, for manufacturing and some other segments the employment decline seems to be more a result of automation, the fact that foreign manufacturing has caught up, and the smashing of unions - leaving workers with no bargaining power for things like compensation, retirement, job security, training to keep up with change, etc.

We depend on foreign trade. Bailing on TPP just means that China will lead TPP, along with member states such as Canada, Mexico and Asia.

Can anyone suggest that is BETTER for us?

Yes, they very well might. It seems to be in their DNA.

The thing that is so stupid about this is that they believe their own propaganda. "White working class" almost sounds evil. They use the term like an epithet. The trouble is that what is good for the white working class is also good for the black working class, the Hispanic working class, and working class women. It's like they are completely hung up with that term - white working class - so they shall ignore the issues that effect them.

Dammit, we are Americans. We should take their "white working class" term and club the liberals over the head with it every single time they use it.

    We are Americans. :flagus:

Hillary thought so. She came out against TPP, too.

TRUMP said, "You called [TPP] the gold standard of trade deals. And then you heard what I said about it, and all of a sudden you were against it. "

Clinton responded, " I did say I hoped it would be a good deal. I was against it once it was finally negotiated and the terms were laid out."

but, but, but, ......it would be "racist", "homophobic", "mysogynistic", and ,"hateful" not to play identity politics at every turn.

yes, we don't need highly managed trade that gives corporatists power over sovereign states and peoples.

many IT and customer service jobs are going overseas too, which imo is also a national security issue if other countries control our corporations from overseas

Exactly. She came out against its final form. Trump, too, was against the final form of TPP and NOT opposed to trade deals in general.

The difference is that Trump was claiming that his deals would solve the problems faced by rust belt manufacturing workers. That is BS.

Her main direction was training (to keep up with industry change), education programs (especially to move the next generation toward being competitive in new market segments) and infrastructure investment (to provide near term jobs). Dems have also opposed the smashing of unions that has left these people with no way to push for better compensation, better working conditions, training, job security, etc. The right wing and corporations smashed the unions (leaving these workers powerless), and now give these workers fake solutions.

Today, these workers are SOL, and suggesting it is because of trade deals is ridiculous. There are far too many other factors, and the few cases where we might "bring it back" are going to come back with full focus on automation, because that is what makes sense for corporations.

It is interesting because the Democratic Party was has always been about the working class although they have focused on the plight of minorities and women in more recent years. One problem they face is that "working middle class white Americans" often based their beliefs on prejudice as opposed to fact and that prejudice is generally linked to anti-minority prejudice.

So how does a party reach out based upon facts and information to people that formulate their opinions upon prejudice?

Donald Trump was very good at exploiting the middle class white Americans because instead of being honest with them he just jumped with both feet in to their imaginary world created by prejudice. It didn't matter that "manufacturing jobs' weren't "exported" or that adding manufacturing jobs (less than 4% of all jobs) really wouldn't help an economy based upon service sector jobs (over 70% of all jobs). Why be honest when being dishonest is much more effective?

I don't know that the Democrats can stoop that low because to live in a fictional world built on prejudice is to abandon the truth which is the oppression of minorities and women in the United States because of prejudice against them. You can win an election doing that but the price tag is that it harms the nation.

That's the potential threat of Donald Trump. His imaginary world causes great harm to the real world.

So, you opt for trade in the Pacific arena managed by China?

How much do you think China cares about YOUR issues?

Many of the customer service "jobs" that went overseas have come back because of customer demand. IT "jobs" may go overseas but IT innovation remains very strong in America. It's actually a misnomer to refer to these as "jobs" of course because the jobs don't go anywhere. We purchase goods and services and we produce goods and provide services and we need to focus on what we do and not what other countries do.

Quite a lot. We are their biggest consumer. And it is not like anybody else wants to be bullied by China. If the US pulls out of TPP, it is dead.

China doesn't manage the trade and why the hell should China be concerned about American economic issues? We're not concerned with China's economic issues are we?

We purchase Chinese produced goods because we can afford them and raising the cost just means Americans can afford less. That really doesn't make any sense. We also sell products to China and if we produce superior products we'll sell more to China. We can do that as well.

Here's something that's interesting. I worked for a multi-national company that had machine shops in the US and in China. I worked here and we had to compete based upon cost and quality of the machined parts. We won those "competitions" repeatedly and our machine shop was running at maximum capacity and we couldn't handle any more work. China makes "cheap stuff cheaper" but as soon as you get into high quality work the US is far better based upon cost.

Well in a healthy political culture, that would be the case. In fact, in an economic sense, there really isn't a difference in the concerns among the white working class and any other non white working class. Blacks and Hispanics are in the exact same situation in regards to their economic issues. But they sure didn't vote that way did they? That shows the power of identity politics. You can't just decide to turn that off. The left has been playing that tune for two generations. They can't switch now.

all I can say that is not what I am seeing, I am seeing many jobs go overseas and not coming back, and with corps moving to the cloud, this will only be more so in the future

anything we invent here, other countries will make cheaper... be it solar panels or what not.... which is why we need import taxes to even the playing field

the resources we need, but can not produce here, we can tax lower or not at all.... that will have to be adjusted as needed per country, we make deals and Trump claims know the art of the deal, let's see if he does... not holding my breath though

    ....

I don't see any "national security" issue with that - let me know what you think.

However, it is nutty to believe that we, the 5% of the world's brain power, can maintain our national economic lead, our international competitiveness, and standard of living progress without a real focus on college, without the trained brains required to compete in information, high tech, innovation, and a rapidly changing employment picture.

Other nations are doing that. India has some of the best universities in the world. Just China and India together have something like 8 times as many people like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and others who create the industries that lead the world.

Companies like Alibaba are poised to be serious competitors world wide. We've seen Samsung phones be competitive, and one should notice that there are software platforms other than Apple and Android. A successful platform in Asia would generate huge revenue and offer the investment dollars to compete world wide. Is that important? Apple makes 1/3 of its revenue in the US. The Asian search engine market is dominated by Baidu.

The lost votes (that would have gone to Bernie) will be lost for good if the Dems don't cease with the identity politics, and get back to an unbiased focus on the lower socio-economic stratas.

Much harder, IMHO. I reckon the B man would be your Prez Elect today, had the Dems not pushed their identity agenda. Expressed so appallingly by the positioning of a female candidate who was less likely to actually win.

sadly we can't afford to hire American if 3rd world countries can outbid us, and unless America becomes a 3rd world country like some republicans want, that needs to be addressed
