'Socialism' is now a meaningless term: in practice what most people mean by it is more social welfare measures (which generally, if not taken too far, make capitalism work better).

It used to mean collective ownership of the means of production. Wherever this was tried, it didn't work, and the reason for this -- the 'Socialist Calculation Problem' -- was spelled out nearly a hundred years ago. Plus the spectacular success of capitalism in lifting the Third World, and especially formerly-socialist countries who got rid of socialism, out of extreme poverty, means that while there is plenty to complain about in capitalism, there is nothing to celebrate in (genuine) socialism.

So now people who claim to still believe in the original meaning are like Christians who believe in heaven with its 72 virgins or whatever. They don't even try to explain how a planned economy, with no market, would actually work. It's just an emotionally-comforting faith.

 

The 'socialism' chant by the right has gained no traction whatsoever.

 

It doesn't have to. The left has done a great job putting out the socialist message.

I don't want people who legitimately hate America and my countries culture to run for office, volunteer for causes, start campaigns and movements, protest, or "stay here and fight".

Europe did that and now they have daily terror attacks and people in office saying it's "Just part and parcel of living in the big city"

I'd be much happier if people who despised America just left honestly XD

 

What we are hearing really is that certain people do not want people who disagree with them running for office or voting or standing up and saying, "I think you are wrong, we need to do it this way.
