"You can't provoke, you can't insult the faith of others, you can't make fun of faith," - Pope Francis, Jan 15, 2015.

    http://uk.reuters.com/article/2015/01/15/uk-france-shooting-pope-idUKKBN0KO16Q20150115

Question: do you believe that the Pope just declared war on free speech!? My opinion is that he kind of did. The Isalmic State and Boko Haram and AQ and the Taliban are rejoicing today that a fellow Abrahamic faith leader threw free speech under the bus. He's indirectly providing cover for the Jihadists to work their evil, as faith is the Jihadists main tool to get recruits. End faith and the Jihad eventually ends.

NOW are you starting to see that Christianity is, indirectly, going to be a hurdle to overcome if we are to end this Jihad war once and for all!?

Faith is not sacred....faith is the problem.

    Your thoughts?

The Pope just stepped in it!
    Jesus' stock just tanked.
    This war just got real.
This will be a turning point in this war. January 15, 2015: Christians defending faith over freedom.
This will blow up in their face.
This is a great day for Modern Secular Humanism, a turning point!

It's finally time for people to condemn faith.

If nothing is sacred, life becomes absurd.

    I agree with the Pope.

Mocking someone's faith does not further understanding and tolerance.

Would it be ok if someone drew a cartoon making fun of a gay person? How about a disabled person?

A person's faith is an important part of their identity, I don't see how mocking it furthers the dialog in cultural differences.

It is a question of R-E-S-P-E-C-T-I-N-G anothers cultural identity.

When does D-I-S respecting ever lead to a positive dialog?

You cannot tell me that all 1.2 billion Moslems support ISIS, support terror, suport violence against the non-Moslem. Why go out of your way to insult all 1.2 billion?

How does this further civilized dialog?

As an example, how did dropping a crucifix into a jar of human urine and cow's blood invite tolerance?
This was an actual piece of art displayed at a Brooklyn museum, and clearly the intent was to disrespect the Christian faith.

"It is true that you must not react violently, but although we are good friends if (he) says a curse word against my mother, he can expect a punch, it's normal.", said Jesus' #1 guy January 15, 2015.

Religion expects "a punch", but Modern Secular Humanism expects civility.
Religion calls violence "normal", but Modern Secular Humanism calls violence abnormal.
What do you expect from a belief system that whole-heartedly approves of their God 1.0 killing all of humanity (except Noah’s Ark) and all the animals, and their God 2.0 killing probably about 2 billion people (see Revelation)? Expect more from Modern Secular Humanism.

More of the Pope's words on the subject for those of you implying he's attacking free speech/expression:

You're free to say whatever you like, but don't insult something that someone cares deeply for not not expect a reaction. What if someone were making lewd comments to your children, mocking your disabled family member or saying your mother smelled of elderberries?

Yes, you have the freedom to express your self, but in some cases you bare the responsibility for the reaction it provokes. Just like you can't say bomb in an airport or fire in a theater. I'm not excusing the reaction the Pope's referring to, just pointing out that it shouldn't be surprising.

    I ain't buying a Frank t-shirt no more.

Faith should be mocked into a dark corner - the same corner occupied by tarot cards, stage psychics, and alien abductees.

The Islamic texts say that Mohammad had sex with a 9-year-old girl, and Muslims defend that action of his constantly, so are you telling us that we can't make fun of Mohammad for committing horrific felonies? That we should just ignore it when 1.5 billion people think that a pedophile is the "best role model for all time"!? You're not serious, are you?

But shouting "fire" in a theater is a LIE. Being honest about an insane religion is not a lie! Can't you see that difference? So as long as we are being honest, making fun of faith should be perfectly ok, but being dishonest is not.

So the question SHOULD be "they mocked faith, and they have every right to do that, but is what they said TRUE or not?"

The Pope wants respect for beliefs that are so vile that they are perfectly fine with, say, all Jews and all Hindus being burned alive ("hell") just for picking the wrong super-hero. That DESERVES mocking!

So it's ok when the poor little disrespected Muslims "punch" back!? Not with more mocking, but with violence? That appears to be what you are saying.

If you have a child with downs and I call him a retard I'm not lying, but I should also expect a potentially violent reaction. Next time your out, walk up to some guy with a plus sized wife and tell him she's a disgusting cow and see how it goes! Hey, you won't be lying!

I think he's just saying there's no possibility for dialog if you start the conversation with "Everything you've been taught your entire life is a disgusting sham and your idol is a pedophile"

Of course not, it's absolutely wrong, but entirely predictable. Just like in the cases I mention above.

downs syndrome is not a choice.

and fat people are often mocked. most don't kill people in response, and some are prompted to become unfat as a result.

Irrelevant to the quote I replied to, he implied the accusation only needed to be true. Though I could change it to walking up to a black person and dropping the N bomb, also not a choice, would also potentially evoke a violent reaction.

You're both missing the point though, this is a book publisher, they want to sell books. Why would they want to offend anyone who may be a potential customer? It's really that simple.

The difference is that mocking faith is mocking some dead guy, and mocking the unscientific/immoral beliefs of said dead guy. THAT can be done all day long, morally....in fact, moral people have a duty to do that, especially when we are in the longest war in US history, with no end in sight, and the enemy is so incredibly "mockable".

    - - - Updated - - -

When you go to bed and are lying there tonight, realize that you are wiser, and more moral than the Pope.

The majority of people on the planet care deeply about the beliefs of long dead persons, whether you think they should or not isn't relevant at all.

I can't understand why you like fat chicks, but you'd still be angry if I called your spouse a whale. Again, you're dancing around the point, which is that this is a for profit enterprise and as such why would they want to offend any potential group of buyers?

Valid point. However, they can change their beliefs/religion, of course.

    Oh, it's relevant all right.
I don't insult fat people, but if some ancient "prophet" thinks that approval of slavery and rape of captives is ok (Moses and Mohammad both did), then his beliefs should of course be mocked, if we are moral, that is. It's not my fault if people are too afraid of death to face the truth about those religions.

Correct, they don't change easily, but as the truth gets out about religions, they will change more and more easily. I have "faith" (did I just type that?) in reality, and faith in the truth.

I tend to focus not on what is, but rather on what realistically can be.

Just because something is "predictable" does not in any way mean that it's right, I think we can both agree. It's "predictable" because their #1 role model (Mohammad - did the same thing) had critics of his put to death for simply mocking him. That behavior needs to stop, of course. So to stand up to that is righteous.

No, Poop Francis is saying to not even mention that Mohammad is a pedo in the first place! In other words, shut down all serious criticism of religion....that's because he's insecure about his own religion (rightfully so, as it has a talking donkey and a talking snake in it!)
