    Our dollar was never intended to be a "world currency" in the first place. It is seen as such, not because of anything the Congress has said or acted upon, but only because that is what merchant a, will accept as payment from merchant b, pretty much anyplace you go in the world.

    And that's only because the U.S. government is seen as being stable, not because of any-kind of actual monetary value intrinsic to a dollar bill.

    Number two, the Federal Reserve does not set a (*)(*)(*)(*) thing. Congress does.

    And yes, the Congress could, despite what some leftist would have us believe, end the Reserve tomorrow.

    Read your Constitution folks, Congress holds the purse strings in this nation, not Obammy, not the DNC, not the FedReserve.

    Aside from that 200 year old irrelevant document, that old rag called the Constitution, to hear leftists tell it.

    The citizens of the United States, as the legislature is our direct, representation in our own Government.

    yes, other countries use the US Dollar for its stability. That is what I am questioning. It isn't as stable as it used to be. Some are looking at alternatives for stability as a way to protect themselves. The gold rush is one obvious indicator.

    The Federal Reserve, because of Congress, has been left unchecked. Congress could do far better in that regard. As history has shown, they want a lid on that can.

    Riiigggghhht. Because Congress would never mess with the money supply for political purposes. Like, say, in an election year.

    The whole point of the Federal Reserve was to keep Congress' grubby hands off the lever.

    What does Barry stand for, exactly? He has broken all of his promises on warrantless wiretapping, closing Gitmo, bringing all the troops home, etc. He signed the National Defense Act quietly on New Year's Eve.

    No, a lot of the marxists and left don't like him, but guess what, they will still vote for him.

    Because trying to enact Laws that MAKE People pay for something is in fact a "power grab" on his part. No such power was granted the Fed by way of the Constitution, and he doesn't have the "power" to just take it...

    Must I quote myself? I clearly stated that we are still in a early phase, a subtle beginning along this road. The question here was never "does USA=3rd Reich", the question was are these changes in the vein of socialism or fascism.

    You also seem to have forgotten a lot of things that already are true, the Federal government consistently increases its share in the control of production, from education to the post office. This "Executive Order" is also a precise example of "centralized autocratic government" (issuing mandates without any democratic process whatsoever). "Dictatorial leader" means the guy "dictates" policy. He doesn't have to smell like Hitler to fit the bill. Just because you're enamored with the guy don't turn a blind eye to the ethical, moral, and even legal outrages his actions constitute. The public in every case has been enamored with every dictator that has come along---and the apologists continued to downplay the incremental changes to the last moment, as you are doing.

    The President has pretty broad powers during times of war and rebellion in his capacity as Commander-in-Chief.

    Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus and had editors of newspapers that were pro-Confederate put in prison without trial.

    Lincoln freed all slaves in the rebelling states by executive order.

    FDR rounded up all U.S. citizens of Japanese ancestry living in the Western United States and put them in internment camps.

    The government instituted price controls and rationing during World War II.

    Hawaii was put under martial law for the extent of the war.

    By that logic, you could call any perceived increase in federal power a "first step" toward socialism or fascism. So that's just stupid.

    Really. Did the government eliminate private schools? Are Fed Ex and UPS out of business?

    Never mind that the post office is a Constitutionally mandated government service. :eyeroll:

    And public education, you probably don't remember, is one reason we have near 100% literacy in this country.

    There are no "mandates" in the EO. The EO refers to a law, duly passed by Congress using the democratic process. It merely outlines how the executive branch will carry out that law.

    So how does a dictatorial president differ from a non-dictatorial president?

    You do realize that the president is the chief executive of the executive branch, right? He's their boss. He's allowed to tell them what to do.

    I'd be a lot more concerned if the critics of the EO hadn't all proved themselves either incapable of reading the EO, or incapable of understanding it.

    I am going to call BS on this.

    Obama has been weak willed, but hardly a power grabber like Bush. If I could fault Obama for anything it's not being a stronger leader than he has been. He should have followed through with his convictions more than he has. He's allowed people to lead him to retain many bad things that Bush put in place. He keeps the status quo and is afraid to make waves to often.

    You guys listen to Hannity, Rush and the like way to friggin much and take too much of what they say as truth.

    You are familiar with the Bretton-Woods system? It established the US Dollar as the world benchmark currency after WWII. Everyone's currencies were pegged to ours, and ours was pegged to gold. And at the time, there was enough gold in our vaults that we could convert currency to gold, so that gold was effectively the international reserve currency.

    Then in '71 Nixon effectively ended it. After that, for the sake of stability, everyone simply began using dollars as the reserve, as it was already established as a major and stable currency.

    During all of this, we also established the Petro-Dollar system.

    Other oil-exporting countries agreed to the same deal before the end of the decade. And essentially, it meant that anyone who needed to buy oil (which I don't need to tell you, is at the core of our economy in so many ways) needed to get dollars to buy it. This cemented the Dollar's status as the world reserve currency.

    To say that this was not deliberate betrays a total lack of understanding.

    And actually, that is the entire value of a reserve currency: stability. Even gold's so-called "intrinsic value" only derives from the fact that it is a scarce resource, available in relatively stable amounts over time.

    And we have taken advantage of the Dollar's international status, and would be in for a very rude awakening should it change suddenly.

    "The Defense Production Act has been in effect since the Truman Administration, and authorizes the President to direct private business to allocate resources to national defense as needed in a time of national emergency. Since the end of the Cold War, if not before, the Act has been used primarily to use DOD contracting practices to direct investment in new technologies that would be used for defense purposes, however it still requires the Executive Branch to at least plan for the possibility of allocating resources for national defense in the event of a national emergency in much the same way that rationing was implemented during World War II. Now, fortunately, we have not faced a national emergency of that type in the 50-odd years that the DPA has been in effect but that doesn’t mean that such an eventuality, brought about by either international crisis or natural disaster, should not be planned for. Despite that it was released as part of the “Friday Document Dumps” that have become all too common in official Washington, that appears to be all that this Executive Order is about.

    As for the Executive Order itself, Ed Morrissey notes that all it really appears to do is update very similar EO’s that were issued by President’s Reagan and Bush 41, and their Executive Orders appear to do nothing more than mimic Orders issued by Presidents going all the way back to Franklin Roosevelt:"

    All of that has been pointed out multiple times -- even the Ed Morrissey write up. It doesn't matter. They've read about it in some blog, and even if the EO contains some large words they don't quite understand, and references previous EOs and laws they haven't bothered to read, they're sure it's outrageous, unprecedented and unAmerican.

    I call BS on this.

    PrezBO has not only kept and implemented the policies of Bush but enhanced them through EO's. Not only wiretapping of US citizenry without a warrant is legalized to government agencies but also assassination and indefinite detention without judicial review or due process.

    PrezBO is much more of a fascist than Bush 43. He's much more of a fascist than even FDR... or Mussolini.

    Those who talk about the monolithic "the people" have only one interest. Using "the people" and grinding them down. Kim Il Jung was big on "the people", too. It's even "The People's Republic". Hilarious, isn't i.

    And the Declaration of Independence includes these words:

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights,[75] that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

    I realize liberals have rejected the cosntitution but have they also rejected the Declaration of Independence?

    "Just stupid" is ignoring the fact that every step in the wrong direction, like a dose of drugs, contributes to the ultimate end. Cocaine (apparently) feels great until you overdose or run out of it.

    I shouldn't have to remind you I said "increased share" not "elimination of competition". Any econ 101 student knows that competition is only nominal beside a state monopoly (even partial).

    That's fine, I'm fine with the view that the constitution is hardly a "perfect" document, but thanks for assuming I'm your stereotypical opposite.

    I'm the first to admit I'm not an expert, but I'm pretty sure "executive order" is actually defined by the fact that it bypasses congressional approval...

    Executive direction of economic resources is textbook dictatorial power. The president hasn't actually assumed this role yet, but I never claimed that. Besides, if EO does in fact qualify as non-democratic, as I believed, they are themselves dictatorial actions, and this kind of baby-step towards fascism is by no means a novelty.
