And once again I will start this thread by saying I do NOT want to take guns away from the American people - I am simply taking a good long look at the myths surrounding guns and many of the memes that have come to infect the arguments

Okay we'll just give them swords and spears instead

Why does Switzerland have a much higher concentration of gun owners than the US does, and yet not anywhere near the crime rate?

You DO realise don't you that those "guns" are actually military issue and not really private ownership?

In other words what they do not have are the gun myths that America has surrounded itself with

Because the myths do not stay in America they float around and infect the gullible and unfortunately when enough of those are infected it can become viral. They form the basis of the culture that is in part causing the unacceptable level of homicide and gun related violence in your country - something you lot seem to like and accept but I do not want that replicated here

I understand now. You want to implement gun control in Australia, not America.

Because every Swisser serves in the military and is required by law to keep their guns to age 45 or so... and they have a strong commitment to neutrality.

Again, I'm not sure why. You've got your gun control. What do you care what we in America think or do?

Exactly what guns do you wanted banned for private ownership in any given country, assuming the nightmare senario where you could write the gun laws?

I would guess you would want something like an Aussie/UK ban for private, law adiding citizens: no handguns of any kind, no semi-auto weapons of any kind.

About 1/4 of homes in Switzerland have a fully automatic assault rifle WITH AMMO for it on hand in their homes. So why is crime so very low in Switzerland with all these evil weapons in so many homes? The "gun culture" is very alive in this country and the rural parts of America (with similar low crimes rates) so my guess would be it is the bad people killing other people and not the "bad guns" that are to blame.

Guns make it a hell of a lot easier.

Which is why people conceal carry firearms and not butter knives.

Why does a city like Chicago or Detroit have a much higher crime rate than a city like Plano, TX - despite having much stricter gun control laws.

Who are you to determine what is 'unacceptable' of another nation - who made you one-world ruler? If you were concerned about homicide, you'd get off the 'gun' argument and focus on Russia for example, which has about double the homicide rate of the US (also despite having much stricter gun control).

Just be glad you don't have an influx of illegal immigrants, and large uneducated black ghettos in Australia - that accounts for the violence far more than the guns do.

No, they even the status quo - Ozzy was wrong - the reason they take guns to war, is because they know the other men will be carrying guns too. Hypothetically if no one had any guns (or hand-to-hand weapons), they would simply beat and strangle each other to death in war - it would be just as deadly, possibly even more macabre and disorganized.

The culture surrounding guns and their use plays a huge part - this is why I debate that culture rather than try to take guns away from Americans (as if I could anyway!!)
    Ditto - and reversed

Who are YOU to determine that I do not have a voice to speak against what is being spread on the internet?
Oh! But we do!!! We just make sure that once they are here they do not play with guns

speaking of myths...or actually strawmen / falsehoods..

But, and this is a big but please stop spreading this elephant excreta all over the internet that somehow guns are magical safety shields

the EE being spread here is by you.

Cars dont kill people, whiskey doesnt kill people, swords dont kill people.
They are not free agents with will.

Except in myth and dishonest rhetoric.

Again, I'm unclear about why you care whether or not these myths "go viral". What do you care what people in America, or even Australia, think?

It is a play on words.

Guns don't kill people, that is true, considering that they are an inanimate object without a will of their own. However the people who mindlessly repeat that popular bumper sticker slogan do not realize that the gun control advocates position lies in the effective of a firearms ability to injure/kill other people with human manipulation.

So what is dishonest about pointing out that this particular meme is meaningless?
