Unless the cons give the dems what they want, the automatic cuts will go into effect. And then in January the the dems in the new congress, will offer a bill giving everyone making less than $250k the Obama tax cuts, daring the cons to reject the cuts. If the cons reject the cuts, any recession will be on them. This was revealed by a dem congresswoman on CNN this morning. The cons only have a few days to deal before Christmas vacation. The defense cuts alone, are enough to get the cons sweating.

Nothing new. Democrats are willing to sacrifice the economy, as long as they can have a chance to blame the republicans.

Maybe BOTH Democrats and Re4publicans should take a minute and consider some important issues raised in the recent CBO report: Choices for Deficit Reduction

Democrats want tax increases with minimal spending decreases. Republicans want spending decreases with minimal tax increases, or even tax decreases. That puts us squarely in the realm of the second paragraph, above - the "alternative fiscal scenario".

Some of the other issues discussed in this report:
What Factors Are Putting Increasing Pressure on the Budget?

What Are Some Possible Targets for Deficit Reduction?

What Criteria Might Be Used to Evaluate Policy Changes?

What Kinds of Policy Changes Could Lead to a More Sustainable Budgetary Path?

That last one deserves to be quoted:
As well all know, Americans as a combined entity are NOT WILLING for the government to raise taxes OR cut entitlement and defense spending. Nor are politicians going to be eager to do what is necessary since what is necessary is always going to be unpopular with at least 50% of the voting public. This is a serious quandary we've gotten ourselves into

We the people of BOTH political persuasions better get our sh!t together on this problem and stop behaving like immature children who can only have "my way or the highway" or else we ALL are going to be in deep doo-doo in the not too distant future.

Its time to get into trouble, maybe if it gets bad enough the politicians, and the people, will realize we need to practice fiscal responsibility.

Here's hoping for rough days ahead.

Wrong! It's the CONS that have sacrificed the economic recovery for the last four years, in their effort to make Obama look bad. And in case you didn't notice, it backfired big time. After the automatic cuts go into effect, the libs will introduce tax cuts for EVERYONE making less the $250k. If the cons reject it, any recession is on the GOP. I'm just giddy with delight. It's good to be the winner, and sucks to be a con, huh.

I find it funny that the left believes raising taxes on the rich will solve all our problems.

I think the GOP should bow down to Obama that way when nothing changes they can lay the blame squarely on him and say, "I told you so dumbs**t".

Good! Tat's what I thought President Obama should have done already in 2010 instead of giving in to the Republican blackmail to let all bush tax cuts expire and to refuse ro extend unemployment benefits!

He should have let all the Bush tax cuts expire in 2010, then propose the Obama tax cuts for all income below $250,000 to take effect on January 1st , 2011.

glad he is considering it this time. and I think that the "Obama's middle class tax cuts" sound s a lot better than "Bush tax cuts for the wealthy" anyway!

Watching you guys squirm when confronted with facts is whats fun to watch.

Your only hope is that the republicans try to block you in some way so you can blame the failure on them. You know that if they give Obama what he wants that your up s**t creek. I believe even in your partisan world you know that taxing the rich will not even bring in a fraction of the percentage needed to solve anything.

That's why I say do it. Give Obama what he wants and start planning the rebuilding process after the country starts heading south.

Actually, the Republicans have demonstrated that they have been willing to hurt the economy SOLELY to "make Obama fail," and we have all just witnessed how successful that plan has been for the Republicans!

And now you want a remake of it?

You really are a glouton for punishment!

It will keep the Middle class taxes to the same level as it is today, and it will raise SOME of the revenues that Obama (and all resonable people) want for a BALANCE approach to reducing the deficit.

then the two parties can talk about the "cliff" qnd how to compromise with spending cuts and more revenue increases (getting rid of corporate welfare, waste in entitlements, and tax loop holes for people making over $1 million, and some cuts in defense spending).

He didn't let them expire because he was advised that to do so would have an adverse effect on the recovery. He was caught between the need for increased revenue due to drastically increased recessionary spending but allowing the tax cuts to expire would've only further burdened the consumer, slowed economic activity, and prolonged the recovery. he and Congress didn't have a whole lot of choice at that time - now they do.

I'm glad you see how futile the arrogance of the GOP trying to dictate ALL of their conditions for a "compromise" really is.

If you really want to play a game of chicken. . . We all know where it took the GOP!

    Remember. . . Obama has a 53% favorability rating. . . congress has an 11% favorabili rating!

What you are talking about here in this op is nothing new-If you would have turned to another TV station instead of relying on the bubble infested Fox news misinformation & lies-you would have been properly imformed months ago as to what is actually going on in the world of politics-this fiscal cliff thing is actually just a bump-if the Dems do nothing-the Bush tax cuts expire(also getting rid of Grover Norquist & his stupid tax pledge)then the country panics for about 4 hours-then OBAMA enacts the middle class tax breaks again & the top 1% pays their fair share-the debt starts to get paid down & wha-la on we go to the next issue---
Your ignorance on this is astounding-but I guess that is because you had a candidate that was going to wait until "after" he bought the election to clue you in.
I am so happy that the majority of the American people could not be bought & did not believe the lies, the misinformation, the bull-pucky the GOP was trying to hand us.....OBAMA:grin:
