God also created people with a free will, to either choose to be with Him, or not to be with Him. Jesus knew what the wrong choice entailed, so He tried to help them. Look stop thinking of God as some big powerful father figure up in the sky, telling people that if they don't do this or that he's going to punish them. If the Old Testament gives you that impression, it's because people at that time could not understand God in any other way. Christianity goes a little beyond a don't do this or don't do that it's wrong...because human beings are prideful beings, and we're all limited (sins) in that way. To be a Christian is to acquire the Holy Spirit within one's heart, so people will stop reacting to their passions, and their 'reasoning' will take over.
