What is a social norm in America that you feel is ridiculous?

I just enjoy talking like that! I remain calm while I'm doing it because it's fun.

I really don't care if the majority of people don't understand what they're talking about well enough to realize that we have no official language.

Why are you so bothered about this anyway? How does this in any way make your life worse?

 

Excellent observation. It bugs me too. It sounds insincere and certainly unoriginal.

 

State of attire. Belly hanging out below a tshirt, pajamas in restaurants, no concern for how someone looks, etc..

 

Me too. I want to tell them 'Go....'. Sounds so phony.

 

My city has bike lanes and people won't use them because they complained when we didn't have them and now they complain that they are not as adequate as the roadway. Waste of money those things are.

The social norm I believe is most ridiculous is the idea that a university diploma is supposed to mean something. It is just a piece of paper. Just because you have one does not mean that you are entitled to anything or are even especially knowledgeable in anything of value to others.

And thus goes the downfall of the society...The younger generations think it is nothing to stand there and cuss somebody out, but then wonder why someone of my generation decks them. These young people, mostly guys, don't know what courtesy is...They'd rather have a facebook fight than settle it like a man, and that doesn't always mean fighting.

Here's my situation...I work part time for an FFL dealer, there is the owner his brother and me, none of us speak Spanish. Yes we have Spanish 4473's but I can't tell by there speech if they are trying to do a straw sale, I cannot properly educate someone on the features of a firearm, and quite frankly we lose sales because we refuse to sell to someone we cannot understand and cannot understand us. Sign on the window says No hable espanol. We've had people come in who are pissed because of that sign, I don't care...you're in my country not Mexico.
I have lived in over 30 different countries in my military career and have always learned enough of the language to get by, and say please and thank you.

 

On the other end of the spectrum, I see thes old pictures of people at a basball game in the middle of the summer, wearing jackets, ties and top hats, thinking to myself, "If it was like that today, I'd never go!" I couldn't enjoy myself dressed like that.

 

If you don't have a translator, that's your problem.

 

Wrong, that. A medical school diploma entitles you to take the state boards, pass, and prescribe drugs. Are you going to leave that to your mechanic?

 

The USA has no "official" language, and you speak the American variant of English.

I really don't like anything legacy, heritage or inheritance. Americans are enthralled by those. It defeats the idea that a person becomes successful through his own efforts and, in general, creates worthless people. Does the word 'Kardashian' mean anything to you?

There is a very big and very obvious distinction.

 

I find it amusing that women are expected to have to keep their breasts covered in public at all times, but it's okay for men to go completely shirtless.

I suppose women have much larger breasts that flop around, so that is the reason they are more risqué and need to be covered. But some very overweight men have breasts that flop around too, and they go out on the beach and expose them without caring.

 

I hope I'm right on this, but I assume that you'd much rather mess around with woman-boobs than man-boobs.

I gotta tell you, if my secretary did not keep her breasts covered, I'd never get any work done. Not the same for my partners.

Cursing and cursing out aren't quite the same thing. Curse words refer to specific words that will only appear as stars on this website, but they can be used in multiple ways. They're just tools for emphasis. Cursing out is something more, it's a hostile application of words of emphasis. I would argue that using curse words to belittle somebody is no more or less courteous than yelling at and insulting them without using curse words. I really don't enjoy Facebook except to reconnect with long lost friends. Settling arguments should be done by private conversation, not concussions or passive-aggressive facebook smack talk.

Actually, I have never used an illegal drug, I was merely repeating studies that have been conducted by Colombia university and others on drug use.. and that is that not even the majority of people who use heroin are addicts. Just like alcohol, the number of people who use who are also addicted are in the minority

Your average drug users are our past three presidents.. that isn't to say that your average drug user becomes president, but just like the average drugs user, the drugs did not destroy these men's lives.. they went about their daily lives unaffected, and lived on to live successful lives. The same cannot be said for people who are hit with a criminal record
