(1) What the woman said was beyond disrespectful; it was altogether insulting--and yes, evil (which, sadly, is a word that is seldom used anymore, in our postmodern and relativist world).

(2) Even so, I was always taught that a man should never strike a woman. (The fact that he merely slapped her--which is much different than hitting her with his closed fist--should certainly be taken into account. Still, I am not sure that this altogether excuses it.)

(3) It is possible to simultaneously believe (1) that what the woman did was totally indefensible; and (2) that a man should never strike a woman under any circumstances. These are not mutually exclusive thoughts.

I honestly believe that someday your forward thinking might apply and be applicable because it's well logical..... But we aren't there yet. There are still a minority of racists out there, and minorities still experience passive racism against them every day....not all of it is in their heads.

Anyway, race has a lot to do with it because you're very likely to get a different reaction from a black person saying it as opposed to a white person, if a black person reacts to it at all.
