I come here to engage in intelligent political debate and what do I get? People who equate the US and North Korea and people who think abolishing ICE is a nonpartisan issue. I get f****** idiots, is what I get.

What were you expecting? This is the internet. Intelligent Debate is an interesting change of pace, from inveterate ranting, memes, communist manifestos, fascist screeds, anarchist charters, insulting other posters, the occasional desultory philippic and lots and lots of trolling. Do you have any suggestions to help improve things? (Remember that anyone who wants us to change our ways is a witch)

It's never been great but it's definitely gotten worse since the Trump win. Virtually every left leaning person on this forum really believes the Russian collusion conspiracy theory. How do you even argue with that? Now it's all "you're a Nazi/facist/racist. Very disappointing.

On the other hand, I feel way smarter after reading some of the nonsense here so there's that.

Starting a war means civilians get nuked? The issue was actually demanding unconditional surrender and Japanese leaders wanting to protect the emperor as a condition. Though they ultimately surrendered because of the soviet threat, not the nukes (which weren't actually more impactful than the regular strategic bombing, which had already devastated their major cities). Though the nukes were a handy excuse to save face in the end.

 

attacking others is not the way to have intelligent political debate, you can disagree with someone, tell them your views, they tell you theirs, if one gets so upset they start swearing when they can't change a person to their way of thinking, that ends the debate

that said, I think some play devils advocate for fun, republicans pretend to be democrats and visa versa, just to get a rise out of people

then of course you have the Russians 'playing' the worst of both sides to divide us

 

it's was bad under Obama too, lest you forget the constant bashing of him, very few post saying anything bad about Trump he doesn't deserve, there is a lot of defending Trump over the craziest of things though

 

The act saved millions of lives on both sides. Please learn history. Its not debateable.

 

It is not JUST implications of collusion. To deny or claim ignorance of the other myriad of reasons people hate trump and despise his following, is either due to extreme and willful ignorance, or delusional thinking, or both.

You are on to something here. It is less about "politics" and more about virtue signaling than anything I've seen in my lifetime. We're really not arguing about policy, and if we are, it's because it's merely a cover and excuse than anything else. Trump's tariffs and stopping illegal immigration policies would have been wildly popular with the 1980's version of liberalism. As Bernie Sanders said in 2015 (before the Dem establishment got to him), "Open borders? That's a Koch brothers idea."

So with the left, policy is far less important than what you actually said, "No good person can support trump, or at least you have abandoned all decency and chosen evil. That is my profound belief." If you really believe that, if you really think you are the White Rose of the 21st Century, and that your opponents are not merely opponents with wrong policies, but evil people with evil plans, how far will you go?

You've defined the current era problem pretty well. We don't have good discussions not because we disagree on tax policy or other public policy ideas, but because you regard me as an evil person supporting an evil dictator.

Now what's the basis of having a rational discussion with that? There isn't one.

 

Ignore them. Don't respond to their posts. For the most part I pick and choose whom I respond to. Just by looking at the post one can tell if the poster is interested in an intelligent conversation or just posting some hate filled political BS in hopes of getting hate filled replies.

I use discretion, you should do the same. Most of those posters you referenced aren't a bit interested in your reply and most won't respond back to you unless they think they got your goat, they want to lower you to their standards. Just leave those posters be and move on. There are quite a lot of other posters here who are interested in political debate and do so civil, thoughtful and intelligent wise.

That's my suggestion.

Agree. I was already a fairly intelligent fellow, but of late our typical posting representative of leftist group think has made me feel like a flipping genius in comparison; and I thank them for that.

Hopefully, you will now move on to ridding yourself of these false beliefs.

 

It’s all about emotional investment and the power of the connectivity of the internet.

People on these forum have PUBLICLY announced their positions on Trump (or other Presidents) so they are far more likely to publically support ANY of their actions than they would have prior to the internet’s existence.

Tribal bonds are also at play. Primeval “us” vs “them”.

In the case of politics, technology has taken the world back to its knuckle dragging past rather than advancing the human condition.

That’s a simple truth.

 

I'm wondering if liberals realize that if they win it all, they lose. The smart ones know that they can run pell mell into oblivion, and conservatives will tow the line. They know that we are their last hope. But they are in love with power and popularity.

 

Why would liberals think that a successful and free USA would be a "loss"?

Remember, we're not like you. We want everyone to succeed. We don't think it would be a "loss" just because conservatives "won" along with liberals.
