Can the matter be judged as being short-sighted if the individual has concluded that they possess no value as an individual, and no value to society at large except in a collective sense, which reduces the sum of their worth to being no different than a common part in a machine, and whose absence can be easily filled and replaced with little effort?

Yeah. I had a kidney stone and wasn't in a position to get enough pain medication. If someone had offered a way out, anyway out, I might have taken it at one point. That's how painful it was.

To that, I would say that's depression and not an accurate self-assessment, and in most cases can be cured via anti depressant medication.

Agreed, but that's tricky legislation. Democrats would be better served by seeking how to do this while still protecting the rights of all citizens, including the mentally ill person.

It's way more evil that that.

Scott Israel got elected by promising the community he would tamp down on his Deputies for arresting youthful offenders, unlike his predecessor, Al Lamberti who was hard line on crime.

As a result of that Deputies had their hands tied, they needed "approval" to arrest a "youthful offender" up from the chain of command and where "strongly encouraged" to use "alternate" undefined methods to resolve crimes.

Because of that policy, by the numbers, violent crimes in Broward went down, well sort of, then homicides went through the roof, can't sweep bodies under the rug.

The MSD mass shooting exposed everything Israel was doing to not enforce the laws, so far he has not been dinged, but the FDLE investigation into the MSD mass shooting has turned up so much corruption within BSO, Israel may end up in prison, like so many Democrat Broward Sheriff's in the past have ended up living in.

Which truthfully, is where he belongs.

The sad thing is, it's the same approach to crime that every democrat led city in the US subscribes to.

My mother suffers from severe back pain. She smokes weed and it helps because she doesn't want to get hooked on pain killers. It's not legal where she lives (pot) but where our family is from, it's brought to her.

It also helps with her mental health.

Is it not an accurate assessment?

To an outside observer, society at large would appear to be largely detached from those that live within it, and disinterested to whatever plight they may be experiencing. Everyone is so absorbed in what they are experiencing for themselves, and so addicted to their personal electronic data devices streaming digital distractions, they cannot see the metaphorical forest for the equally metaphorical trees. They are barely aware of the space directly in front of them, to say nothing of those that are around them. No one stops to converse with anyone during their daily routine, they are too busy rushing from one point to another like rodents in a maze or stationary wheel.

How can one not feel dehumanized and devalued, and left feeling as if life holds neither importance nor meaning that would warrant their continued existence?

Well, that's why we have loved ones, family, friends, religion, which is a substitute for love IMO, ways to stay busy, entertainment, etc.

Been there under different circumstances. My first was too large to eject naturally, could have killed me because I didn’t feel it (I have CIP - congenital insensitivity to pain) until my left side caved and I fell, left me with an unstable leg, nearly unable to walk. They initially thought I had a stroke. Required operation.
But, I can relate, I have been so sick with a jungle fever of some type, contracted in the Amazon, that I would have been ok to go; I was incapable of looking after myself. I have had two smaller since, know what’s happening, but don’t get the pain others talk about.

The problem with the OP is many people seriously contimplating and the following through, mas opposed to those ‘calling for help’, often conceal their intentions; their suicides coming as a complete surprise, with only warning signs exhibited in hindsight. So, what to do? Take someone’s guns any time they appear depressed? Gee... fits lots of Hillary supporters after 2016...but, oh yeah, they don’t have guns.

Just as those who have mental health training have no credibility talking about gun control.

Distractions to try and make an individual forget about how existence seems to hold no relevance or meaning when examined on a larger, impersonal scale?

Fine, you're certainly welcome to suck all the meaning out of life if you want.

It should not have to be only the democrats that are trying to save these lives

Straw man. Republicans are seeking to save lives by allowing Americans to defend themselves. It's the anti-gun Left who seeks to disarm honest Americans and leave them helpless against criminals.

The first priority should be taking guns away from convicted felons. When that is completed come back to the question of taking guns from the suicidal, who rarely hurt others.

What can be done for an individual who has ultimately succumbed to such an outlook on life? Once they regard their worth as being insignificant, what can be done to convince them that such is not actually the case?

I think that most people would agree that a significant number of people commit suicide because they have to deal with the "extreme physical suffering" you mention.

In other words their pain is not controlled because very few doctors are willing to expose themselves to the liability of prescribing analgesics to patients experiencing legitimate chronic pain issues over a long period of time.

I'm sure that situations vary from state to state but I suspect that in states that have more accessible Pain Management Clinics those same states have a lower suicide rate.

Disagreed, but I expect you to continue to push your anti-gun agenda by any means necessary.

First, there is NO substitute for love, anyone who believes that, is much less than a human.

    As for family.

    Not everyone does.

To the North East of me lived a WWII veteran, he was in his late eighties, after retiring, he bought seven and a half acres out here, farmed a bit and then his wife died a few years back, but he carried on.

Twice FDCF, based on calls from out of the state children of his, visited his home twice and on both visits determined, while a bit slow in thinking, he fully understood the world around him.

He had no one to watch out for him.

    Well other than us neighbors.

I didn't say there was. I said religion is a substitute for love. I didn't say it was the equivalent of love. Big difference.

Obviously some don't have a family.

Sure, people can substitute religion for love. Some even put religion before love. Just so we're clear, I define "religion" as a dogmatic adherence to a specific spiritual belief. This covers everything from the establishment of the Catholic church to Jim Jones, Pat Robertson and David Koresh. All reference a specific text, albeit not everyone adheres to their views of the same source.

IMHO, religion (dogma) should be a guidebook, not something that requires such absolute obedience one has to leave their family and loved ones.

This is a HUGE topic obviously and I was generalizing for a reason when I wrote that. The poster I was responding to was talking about a life without meaning. I was showing the ways meaning can be, and is, found. To me, love for another is a direct route to meaning.
