Yes, thats why I specified 'educational platform.' As a practice, abstinance is the most reliable method to avoid pregnancy and STDs. However, teaching abstinance in liu of contraceptives, protection, personal hygiene, knowledge, discernment in partners, sexual discipline etc leads to disaster for more commonly than teaching abstinance and safer sex practices.

Its no different with guns. By presuming youths will simply head our directive of 'don't touch' or by believing its possible to actually control all the guns, we doom those that innevitably will come into contact with them anyway to do so in total ignorance.

 

And if there were no cars, kids could not die in them and if there were prescription drugs, kids could not OD on them, if there were no pools, kids could drown in them and if bullfrogs had wings, they would not bump their tiny asses when hopping.

Define "good possibility". 50%? 1%? .01%? Was that someone a responsible adult with legal access to the gun?

 

You can't 'teach' abstinence to a 14 year old whose entire life has been informed by adults modeling poor impulse control. When you hand the keys to the palace to such a child, they will wreck the joint. And by 'keys' I mean sex-ed and/or gun safety training. You're basically confirming what they already erroneously suspect, that sex (and/or guns) is unavoidable in youth.

True. But that doesnt have anything to do with education. One can be taught about a subject without being encouraged to engage in it.

The problem is that they already 'have the keys.' To treat them like they don't is an insult. As much as some may be more likely to take knowledge as permission, others will just rebel. In both cases, they'll be better off doing so well informed on what they're doing.
