Sadly, the Police union is far too strong. Criminal activity by police is pushed under the carpet. Focus on the union first - see if that can make some positive changes.

But why would tax payers want to fund something that works against them? Why are people happy to let the police act as they like, without any accountability?

I am beginning to wonder if that may not be a good experiment to try in some cities. Say Portland, Seattle, or Minneapolis. Eliminate the police and see how long the city can last with no law and order. The surrounding suburbs could absorb the city police departments with orders they are not allowed inside the city limits. Since one of the major jobs of the police is to protect the firefighters, there would also be no need for them in those cities.
Crime would be contained, the lefties would be happy because there is no longer police of fire dept. to complain about, and the cops who are tired of dealing with thugs would be eliminated and they could go back to minor traffic tickets and enjoying a cup of coffee without fear of being shot in the back.
    Lets rock and roll.

the Los Angeles Police Department was set to receive a large increase in its annual budget from $1.189 billion last year to $1.86 billion (most of the budget increases were for new police bonuses) for 2020-2021 before Garcetti axed that move Wednesday, cutting $100-$150 million
That doesn’t sound like defunding to me. To defund is to prevent from continuing to receive funds. Seems like police dept will continue to receive funds

    A. the headline is a link

    B. No one said they were getting rid of their police force entirely. What did I say? "Sounds like it's starting..."

Try not to be tedious and disingenuous in the same post.

Of course, budget reviews are always in order, and not just for police, but every budget line:

Cities Should Take a Hard Look at Police Department Budgets:

Except you replied...sounds like it’s starting to the post below. Cutting back on the proposed increase is not defunding

Don't bother. I've posted multiple links and he's immune to new, or any information.

On the other hand, if I was a Democrat, I might be taking that position too. He has to know that if Biden starts bleating about defunding the police, and it winds up in the Democratic platform, they can kiss the election goodbye. Even people who despise Trump probably prefer him to no police and rampant anarchy.

You said “over the years”. So how many in the past have been calling for no police force in the city or town they run?

Except that I vote Repub or third party. Always have, always will. Oops. Bottom line is no one is getting rid of any police force.

I think we can defund the war on drugs funding, ect....

we could fire all the bad cops when detected and re-hire good ones

how many here think we should fund bad cops?

the truth is, if the police dept loses some funding if they do not police their own, they will start policing their own

Legalizing victimless crime will definitely free up resources wasted on stupid “crimes” like that.
Let local communities decide if they want such activities, and even if they don’t, violations would be administrative in nature, not criminal.

I admit to be somewhat taken aback at this notion which appears to have developed within the past couple of days. I certainly believe we should be disarming them of this surplus military gear they have, but the thought of defunding them maybe a signal of a grander question we aren't yet really discussing.

That question should be what role/s do we really want our police to fill?

We seem to be asking them to do too much. They enforce traffic laws, respond to domestic disturbance calls, provide first aid, they are the first to respond to people with mental illness, the homelessness, school violence, and also solve crimes on top of all that. Now I completely understand that a large metropolitan police department has many specialists that deal with these aspects, but as far as public perception is concerned, it's all blue, all the same. Also, the burden of smaller cities does not lessen in this equation either.
