    https://www.foxnews.com/us/oregon-education-math-white-supremacy

The Oregon Department of Education (ODE) recently encouraged teachers to register for training that encourages "ethnomathematics" and argues, among other things, that White supremacy manifests itself in the focus on finding the right answer.

An ODE newsletter sent last week advertises a Feb. 21 "Pathway to Math Equity Micro-Course," which is designed for middle school teachers to make use of a toolkit for "dismantling racism in mathematics." The event website identifies the event as a partnership between California's San Mateo County Office of Education, The Education Trust-West and others.

Part of the toolkit includes a list of ways "white supremacy culture" allegedly "infiltrates math classrooms." Those include "the focus is on getting the 'right' answer," students being "required to 'show their work,'" and other alleged manifestations.

"The concept of mathematics being purely objective is unequivocally false, and teaching it is even much less so," the document for the "Equitable Math" toolkit reads. "Upholding the idea that there are always right and wrong answers perpetuate objectivity as well as fear of open conflict."

    ==============================================

You just can't make this insanity up. Perhaps just being able to do Math is racist? Does this make Asians super racists? Perhaps we can tell NASA that getting the right answer is overrated? Soon, all of your children will be able to count to potato.

Math is one of the most objective subjects there is. I can't believe anyone spends their time even considering this crap.

How is showing your work racist?

Are these fools saying minorities are incapable of doing simple math? Sounds like they are the racists.

You want to put these kids further behind? Do this kind of crap. The Left has taken over education and the results have been disastrous.

There are two things in this world that are universal, reading music and math; both are now considered racist.

Last Saturday Gutfeld had a new segment of the show called 'everything is racist.' Thanks to the left he's going to have material for years and years

I wonder more and more how a civilization could give birth to such a madness.

I’ve heard these types of lunacy several times recently. I wonder if their purveyors realize the buildning they’re standing in and the vehicles that brought them their were designed and built by engineers obsessed with “getting the right answers” and frequently having to “show their work” to others.

Ethnomathematics isn’t a new concept. And it’s not junk science either.

You were asked an honest question, why can't you answer it? This is your moment to shine.

Oregon? Or Ethnomathematics as it was introduced in 1977?

    I’m sorry I don’t see your question?

I think it's a way to get a "math" credit without actually taking a math course.

Ethnomathematics started out as, essentially, the study of mathematics of various cultures through history and of today. It also shows how various forms of mathematics of different cultures were subsumed by other cultures. Often changing as a result.

The problem is that race hustlers and SJW's have taken that to mean that mathematics of the type taught by western culture, which they associate with white people, as being racist. What I find funny is that ethnomathematics is about cultural differences between groups of people when it comes to math. Yet so many race hustlers and SJW's claim that white people have no culture when talking in other contexts, yet white peoples math is racist because their type of mathematics subsumed other cultures types of mathematics. Just another example of the double standard that race hustlers and SJW's have. It's why their arguments fail so much against reasoned people.

Everything that whites are better at than blacks is racist.

Everything that men are better at than women is sexist.

Back up how showing work can be racist....

Or just blindly attack me while thinking you are acting superior....

Far-left so-called academics have been implying that for the better part of a decade. '1 + 1 = 2 but if Tyrone came from a broken home then 1 and 1 might symbolize the family structure he never had and thus can cause a traumatic response.' I've seen a liberal so-called academic explain it almost exactly like that. So in Tyrone's case if he answers '1 + 1 = Black Lives Matter' then he's put on the honor role and tax payer funded colleges bump well-qualified applicants so he can have a free ride.

Seriously, I was told to "show my work" all the time, and every other white kid I was in class with had to show their work to. And as we've all demonstrated: I suck HARD at Math. Like, not even close. Math isn't racist, math is about equations pure and simple and the ability to deduce these equations. There's nothing to celebrate or hide about being wrong. Celebrating or hiding it, just weakens the student. So you could say it's racist in both suggesting that they can't and REALLY making it so that they won't be able to learn from their mistakes and get better.

The NBA is 95% made up of black athletes. Yet, their shooting percentage is under 50%. Are they disadvantaged because they aren't 100% in their shooting percentage? Does this make black athletes in the NBA racists? Why is racism in everything today? Who started that? Oh, the left Democrats did.

This issue surfaced in California 4 Months Ago.

    https://www.smcoe.org/about/county-...ounty-partners-to-support-equity-in-math.html

I didn't hear much about it, back then (in October).

But (apparently), 4 Months Later, a Few RW "Media sites" decided that it was worthy as "Outrage of the Day" material?

IF this was such a "Major Issue", Then why wasn't a bigger deal made of it (back then)?

Anyway, this strikes me as PC Run Amok.
But, since I don't live in Oregon, it doesn't concern me.

I have seen people writing on this very board who apparently did not realize that the most important mathematical advance for the average person isn't called "arabic numerals" for a solid historical reason. I have talked to students who called me ignorant because I said that Pythagoras was transmitting something known to the Egyptians. Mathematics has a rich and diverse history, and we often teach it as if it sprang whole from the minds of the Romans and the Greeks alone and has remained unchanged since then by anyone not of a solid European background

In theory requiring students show their work lets the teachers know specifically what the student isn't getting at least in algebra and above. I personally detested teachers who made me do it though. I did it in my head and felt that having to show my work was just a waste of time. In a test of wills one time I had the right answer on every quiz question but got a zero because I refused to show my work. It started when I was called up to complete a problem on the board and just wrote the correct answer and went to sit back down. Between it and the quiz there became a parent conference and I ended up transferring to another math class because my dad, well, he was not a fan of being summonsed to school for anything, let alone petty things, and it got a bit heated in the principal's office that day to the point that transferring to another teacher was a safer path going forward than ever putting my teacher and my dad in the same room again.
