I agree. There has been a generation of new Afghans growing up under relative freedom and opportunity during the last 20 years, and they will not be satisfied with the medieval orthodoxy of the Taliban like the older people might be.
We need to covertly help them in every way we can while overtly shunning the Taliban if they resume their oppression of women and repression of human rights.
We can't do it for them, but we can help.
And if the Chinese can come in and help these people improve the lives of average Afghanis, then more power to them.

To your main point, given the stunning collapse of the Afghan military and government virtually over night the chaos that ensued was inevitable. Complacency on the part of Afghans was replaced with panic. So they flooded the airport.

Until that time the US had been making great progress with the withdrawal during the spring and summer.

The U.S. military has passed the halfway point in withdrawing its forces from Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

U.S. Central Command (Centcom) estimates that it has “completed greater than 50 percent of the entire retrograde process,” flying out roughly 500 loads of material via cargo aircraft and turning over nearly 13,000 pieces of equipment to the Defense Logistics Agency for destruction, the command said in a statement Tuesday.

The United States also has officially handed over six facilities to the Afghan military.

As of June 8 the Pentagon announced we were roughly at the midpoint of the withdrawal in terms of equipment, essentially without incident. The admin was in the process of working out the details of how we would support the Afghan government and military if it was required. Things were going well. Then the Afghan government/military collapsed as the Taliban swept through the provinces meeting little to no resistance resulting in the chaotic situation at the airport. Military equipment left in the hands of Afghans was seized. Afghans flocked to the airport in a panic. The key component to the recent chaos being capitulation by Afghan officials. Something the US had no control over and did not expect.
