The authors of the article are trying to appeal to the center right republicans who do not want Trump or Trumpism to prevail. Now, you can vote third party, but that will only help Trump. You can vote for democrats for the sole reason dems will preserve America's institutions, which Trumpism is bound and determined to destroy. That doesn't mean you have to give up your conservative principles, which, when Trumpism is destroyed or rendered a footnote in history, you can return to. Anyway, that is the gist of the authors' arguments, and I agree with what they are trying to do, as it will help Dems. Of course, I'd always vote for democrats because I am a democrat, and I don't mind helping the neverTrumpers for the time being.

We Are Republicans With a Plea: Elect Democrats in 2022

By Miles Taylor and Christine Todd Whitman
Mr. Taylor served at the Department of Homeland Security from 2017 to 2019, including as chief of staff, and was the anonymous author of a 2018 guest essay for The Times criticizing President Donald Trump’s leadership. Ms. Whitman was the Republican governor of New Jersey from 1994 to 2001.

...the best hope for the rational remnants of the G.O.P. is for us to form an alliance with Democrats to defend American institutions, defeat far-right candidates, and elect honorable representatives next year — including a strong contingent of moderate Democrats.

It’s a strategy that has worked. Mr. Trump lost re-election in large part because Republicans nationwide defected, with 7 percent who voted for Mr. Trump in 2016 flipping to support Joe Biden, a margin big enough to have made some difference in key swing states.

Rational Republicans are losing the G.O.P. civil war. And the only near-term way to battle pro-Trump extremists is for all of us to team up on key races and overarching political goals with our longtime political opponents: the Democratic Party.

Earlier this year we joined more than 150 conservatives — including former governors, senators, congressmen, cabinet secretaries, and party leaders — in calling for the Republican Party to divorce itself from Trumpism or else lose our support, perhaps by forming a new political party. Rather than return to founding ideals, G.O.P. leaders in the House and in many states have now turned belief in conspiracy theories and lies about stolen elections into a litmus test for membership and running for office.

That’s so funny since it’s only democrats that want to destroy Americas institutions.

Pack the courts, eliminate election security, think boys are girls and girls are boys, the constitution should be ignored, religion is bad, I could go on.

Your post fits seamlessly with the thrust of the article I posted about this morning. https://morningshots.thebulwark.com/p/how-alarmed-should-we-be-596

The POT poses a real danger to the country.

All you need to do to imagine how much damage Trump can do next time is watch how rabid loyalists are replacing old guard election officials who respect the will of the majority.

Which majority? The Senate is 50/50 the house is D by 3. The SCOTUS is 6/3 Republican. Which majority were you referring to again?

Pack the courts isn't happening, recognizing people's right to be themselves is a good thing. Religion is fine, using religion to dictate beliefs on other's is bad. I'm sure YOU could go on ... and on ... and on; but lets go back to that point about OUR Constitution; it wasn't Democrats that over ran OUR Capitol, threatening mayhem unless OUR legislators overthrew a free and fair election. It wasn't Democrats that ransacked, defaced and wiped their **** on the walls of the most beautiful public building on earth; OUR Capitol.

The majority of Americans. You do understand the 50/50 split in the Senate and the slim majority in the House do not reflect the political beliefs, on all the key issues of the day, by a majority of Americans, right?

There is no such thing as “trumpism” so it’s all based on phoney lies
The only difference between trump and other Republican presidents is he knows how to get under people’s skin and trigger them and had a loud mouth
Policy wise (you know, the part that matters), what makes them “trumpy” as opposed to “conservative”?
The real kicker is that he was one of the most to the left Republican presidents we ever had and he was willing to work with the other side but your side preferred spite over progress
    Sad!

You don't speak for, or have an authority to speak for anyone but yourself. Your efforts as conflating what you think as a reflection of any group of US citizens seems far fetched, and desperate.

I would remind you that even 80M folks who might have voted for Xiden still don't represent anything but a minority of Americans.

What policies separate 'rational republicans' from 'Trumpism'?

Nor do I claim to. I'm simply basing my assertion on the plethora of polls showing the POT platform (which nowadays is basically anything Trump says it is) is unpopular with the majority. For example........ https://thehill.com/homenews/admini...ght-year-path-to-citizenship-for-undocumented

It may explain why Repubs have lost the majority vote in 7 of the last 8 presidential elections.

LOL.. so, you didn't make the last post where you claimed authoritatively that you did? And for reference, the minority that responds to your polls and tiny. Infinitesimal. They don't represent anyone but the folks who responded. That isn't majority, that's marketing.

So I guess you don't believe the polls on Biden's favorability either. Good to know. Personally, when poll after poll shows the unpopularity of Repub positions on all the major issues I believe them. But you do what you have to do.

The majority of Americans tend to agree with Democrats on top issues, polling shows

Gosh... the methodology question. do the 1200 folks CNN called who answered the phone actually represent the majority? If they only call democrats? Hard questions. Clearly you don' know the answers.

It is good that we finally hear from honorable republicans more concerned with preserving our republic and the constitution than reelection.
