US military shoots down Chinese spy balloon over Atlantic Ocean

They did that in late 2019. It arrived here in February 2020.

 

So that is it? The reason for ALL this fuss is a Chinese balloon violating US airspace? That is really the best you can do?....OK, of course it is. Silly me. Apologies.

They may fly "balloons," but not balloons like this: it is meant to fly at between 80,000 and 120,000 feet-- that is a floor of over 15 miles high; the reason it was not a danger to civilian aircraft, is because it flies above all the air traffic. Also, the balloon itself, was the size of two busses, with heavy equipment inside. Do you think that "lots of people" in New Mexico fly anything like that?

At that elevation, winds are apparently quite powerful. And no, I don't think that the Chinese intended to go have the world talking about their spy balloons. I think many give the Chinese more credit than they are due; similar to the way some, until recently, had made out the Russian military, to be a top notch force.

 

What is your point? I don't know when the story first broke, or when the balloon was known to be about to enter U.S. airspace. When I heard about it, the balloon was over Montana. Are you saying that it should have been downed before that, over the Pacific? If so, I will tell you what I also told XXJefferson#51: Doing that would be taken as a very aggressive response. Despite those on the Right who've been claiming that Biden is pushing us into a nuclear war, he is not the type of leader who tries to create more trouble than is necessary. I would guess that it had been assumed that the balloon was going to mostly avoid our airspace, and we were in a watching mode, to see what they were up to, when the balloon got blown off course. I hear that a balloon was also spotted over Canada, which was likely the same one. So this balloon may have only briefly entered our own airspace before floating into Canadian territory, and then wandered back, into Montana.

 

When Trump was President there were probably eight such balloons but we didn’t hear about them because the “look wasn’t ‘good’!”

Exactly! It was a travesty and a show of Biden weakness that we didn’t shoot it down sooner over Montana. If Biden ordered to shoot over Montana and if the rests of the balloon hurt someone on the ground, Biden should be charged for hurting these people. Biden is a *****, and not a president.
