I don't think you understood me...

Take me, I want Turkey to join the EU. Here, in Belgium (France, Germany, etc.), we defend Turkey and try to explain to people that Turkish membership of EU is a good thing.

But now, because extreme Turkish nationalists are going all crazy and sending warships to Cyprus (...), what are we supposed to do?

Defend Turkey? Saying that it would be a good thing if Turkey joined EU?

The extreme-right and Islamophobes à la Geert Wilders, but also Merkel and Sarkozy, will use the rather "bizarre" Turkish behaviour to say: "Turkey can't join".

And people like me, who defend Turkish membership of EU, are standing in the cold because Turkey is behaving like a naughty teenage boy who deserves a good beating.

Turkey will have the same sort of alliance with China as a cow does with a farmer. The Turks have no idea who they're dealing with. Go for it cow...walk into the milking stall. Moo, moo, moo.

    No, Gilos...

    Israel is behaving quite stupidly.

The USA functioned as "mediator" between Israel and Turkey after Flotilla-incident.

Turkey demanded an apalogy and money for the family of the victims.

=> USA had brokered a deal that Israel would apologize for "technical and operational mistakes". Turkey agreed with this behind the scenes.

Then,... Nethanyahu comes in (under (electoral) pressure of extremists à la Lieberman) and says: "We are not going to apologize."

=> result: Turkey expells Israeli ambassador.

Typical American response, say "Russia" or "China" and y'all go running for the hills.

    Grow up.

I mean no personal offense but this is exactly why far-sighted people in europe and elsewhere objected to Turkish membership in the EU in the first place. Smart people try and anticipate problems while the politically correct, uber liberal 'Islam is the religion of peace and can do no wrong' crowd keeps their heads so deep in the sand that they won't recognize a mortal danger until it bites them in the a$s...and perhaps not even then.

Erdogan just received rousing applause at the UN. He explained , in eloquent diplomatic terms, why Israel's fascist government wasn't worth a rat's arse.

Headache for Obama ? Not any more. He just does as AIPAC instructs.

Islam has nothing to do with this whatsoever.

While everything looks like a threat to some people this realy is not. Turkey's vison of the future of it's own country is basicaly Muslim in nature, and they want to just assist other muslim countries. Turkey and its goals are genuine and not a threat to anyone. They pose no threat or agression for war or terror. If you look at their real agenda, and not the propaganda, you will see their goals are humanitarian in nature. They are not simple followers and will not be drawn into wars that others create and profit off.

I don't know much about Russians, but I have close contact with Chinese on a daily basis. How much contact do you have with a spectrum of Chinese?

The thing is, you don't have to defend the Turkish membership. You don't have to oppose it either. Just analyze the situation, like I do. The Anti-Turkish groups can't be conceived that the Turkish membership would be positive to the Union. So anti Turkish-line will always be there. Before Erdogan, they kept saying that Turkey was controlled by the Army, meaning that Turkey was not democratic enough. Majority of Western Europe will oppose the Turkish entrance. No matter what. And the key point is, Will the EU ask the European people their opinion when Turkey is entering.

Turkey has send warships to Cyprus many times before. It was the secularist and Kemalist Army that invaded Cyprus in 1974, for God's sake. The issue is much more complicated.

Well, the saying is "Turkey for the Turks" but in practice its Turkey for the Muslims. Turkey is 99% muslim because the Christian and Jewish populations have long since been exterminated or driven off. They want to help the Palestinians work their magic in Palestine.

Because American diplomacy (an oxymoron if there ever were one) is the worst in the civilized world, bar, perhaps, Russia. America has no idea what it's doing on the international stage; we just sort of blunder along, scraping our knuckles every which way. There doesn't ever appear to be a cogent, logical, long-term approach to our foreign policy.

The difference between Kemalist Turks and Islamist Turks is obvious. It can be detected on sight alone.

Turkey might benefit short term with this move, but when things turn around in the long run, they'd be left behind in the dust.
