Sounds like your brother gives good advice my friend. Sometimes I wish I had an older brother too. It's good that you recognize how lucky you are to have someone like him.

Sorry about your cousin too. :( It's very sad when someone that young dies through no fault of their own. You can take solice in the fact that he is indeed in a better place now.

Your brother sounds like a pretty wise person. That extends to other things as well though - putting stuff out on the Internet that you might be sorry for later. There have been instances of people who have been denied jobs or fired because of things on their Facebook page, etc. Also, choices about drugs, illegal activity, etc. Soome of these choices can have debilitating or even fatal consequences. Just remember, you don't always get a second chance like I did. I know you know this stuff, I just have to say it since I'm kinda in my "big brother" mode today. I just had a cousin die last night. He had cancer, but until he died he was into drugs. I had another cousin who was murdered over drugs several years back. They were both really good people who made bad choices. Jes' sayin'...

You should be a writer or something. Good advice! Maybe I'll start a blog! ;)

Yes, just remember to be choosy about what things you experience. You don't have to experience something to know that it's not the right thing to do. For example, I've never experienced jumping off a bridge, but I just know that it's not a good idea... ;)

Not to sound too pious here, but I experienced things at a younger age that I lived to regret. Just think about the long term consequences is all I'm saying. Some bells you just can't unring and some things are better left for a later and perhaps wiser time in life.

Well thank you for that. Yes, I learned a lot of lessons in life and kind of lived life the hard way in my early years, but yes, because I learned from those experiences I feel I am a much better person for it. One universal principle in life is that all your experiences make you what you are today. What you do with those experiences going forward will determine on whether that's a good thing or a bad thing going forward... My lame attempt at being an armchair philosopher. ;)

Kind of like a reformatory - you know, where "bad boys" go to live. My dad was in the Army stationed in Berlin and I ran away from home in Berlin (then a NATO occupied city - the wall was still up) and I was sent back stateside to live in a boy's home.

That's great for you. I was the eldest of four (2 brothers, 1 sister), but I went to live in a Boys' Home at an early age, so I guess I wasn't a very good big brother. :(

I'm trying to make up for that now though.

Cool, looks like you and your brother are pretty close. He watches out for you eh?

Also, there's a members pictures thread. Some people like to post their photos out there.

Sure if you want to. Be sure that no personal information is in the background though - have to be careful posting stuff on the Internet...

Well... I hate to gloat, but it's sunny and in the 70s where I'm at. A bit windy though. We say it's always windy in Oklahoma because Texas blows and Kansas sucks. Don't tell my friends from TX & KS I said that though...

Ummm.... probably given your age it's not appropriate for me to get too deep into that subject with you. I wouldn't want to say anything that would conflict with your parents views. No offense, but I'd be more comfortable talking about politics and stuff like that, OK?

Hey, I've been 14 before, I know what you're saying. But... back to what you said earlier: "You've got to work to get what you want" You've hit the nail on the head my friend! This right here is a conservative view.

The liberals would have you believe that people are "owed" a certain standard of living. Not true. Just like your dad and me - self employed. We don't work, we don't eat. No one's standing there promising us unemployment benefits or bargaining for a minimum wage or benefits for us. We offer a service to the marketplace and, based on the value we bring, we set our own wages. Capitalism at it's purest!

Yep good advice (and thanks for the offer). I plan to do that. Right now I'm running this as kind of a test to see if I have the discipline and tenacity to keep it up. To be successful you have to continue to have fresh content. I'm still in discovery mode to see if I'm willing to keep up with it. I was telling my wife this morning that if I'm still doing it in the spring I'll probably put some real money and energy behind it. I just don't want to commit to too much until I've taken a test drive, you know? At my age you kinda get to the point where you have a pretty low tolerance for bull(*)(*)(*)(*). :D

 Took me a while to get to this point, but its' really a great life.

Right now I'm trying to get this blog thing off the ground. If I can figure out a way to make money at it, then I'll gradually trim my consulting hours back and hopefully phase completely out of this stuff. I like what I do now, but I'm starting to look towards a "retirement" job. ;)

It pays the bills and beats the hell of working for a corporation. Been there, done that. Now I have a lot more control over my schedule (like I take 4 day weekends every other week), I get to choose what work I do and don't do. I set my own rates, etc. At least for now I don't have to travel (before this I had a job where I had to fly into Newark every Monday morning, stay all week, then fly home Thursday or Friday). I like the progamming better than the project management - trying to phase out of that. It's just too much a pain in the ass.

Ah duh! Sorry I do that once in a while.

I'm a self employed consultant. Mostly I work with information techology (e.g. programming & stuff), but I also do project management.
