If they are true Muslims then they do believe that. In Islamic theology they believe the Qur'an was never written, and has existed with God for all time, delivered line by line to Muhammad. They have absolutely NO justification within their ideology to ignore certain scriptures, as one is as equally valid as the next. Of course, that's weakened somewhat by the inconsistency in Islam, where certain verses are abrogated by others, but that's better left for a different discussion.

There are varying degrees of adherence in every belief system. That really has no bearing on what Islam commands, though. The history of the religion is brutal, and that brutality continues to this very day. What's new is that apologists try and make excuses for it. I doubt that ever happened before. Who says there is? Double digit percentages of Muslims around the world agree in part with the ideology practiced by ISIS and other groups, and that's just the ones willing to admit to it. The better question is, how can all these millions of Muslims around the world come to misunderstand their own religion to this level? How can Western liberal atheists know more about Islam than actual Muslims living in Islamic societies?
